Facilities & Grounds Foreman

Mohonk Preserve, New York State’s largest member & visitor supported nature preserve, is seeking a qualified person to fill the position of Facilities & Grounds Foreman – Full Time.

The Mohonk Preserve helps to protect the Shawangunk Mountains region and inspire people to care for, enjoy, and explore their natural world.  The Preserve manages 8,500 acres of the northern Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County, NY through four integrated programs – Conservation Science, Education, Land Stewardship, and Land Protection, and is a regional model for large-scale conservation planning.  We have an annual budget of $3.8 million, 35 year-round staff, over 350 volunteers, and a diverse support base of over 16,000 members.

The Facilities and Grounds Foreman (FGF) actively plans, manages and executes stewardship and maintenance projects related to Mohonk Preserve’s infrastructure including carriage roads, bridges, parking areas, buildings, drainage and other land maintenance. The Foreman’s work is hands-on and is actively involved working alongside other staff as a team leader in the day-to-day work to implement the Preserve’s mission and continuum of place-based stewardship. The Foreman reports directly to the Associate Director of Facilities and Grounds. The FGF supervises facilities and ranger staff when they are working on related tasks and projects. This position, in a very scenic location with recreational benefits, provides opportunities to implement cutting edge land management techniques and includes a balanced variety of tasks.

Job Duties:

  • Implement Preserve plans, policies and procedures related to land and infrastructure projects including the Preserve’s Unit Management Plans
  • Oversee maintenance and general organization/appearance/condition of all Preserve carriage roads including wayside structures such as bridges, kiosks, drainage, etc., in accordance with the Preserve’s Historic Carriage Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance Manual
  • Work with the Associate Director of Facilities and Grounds and other staff to establish and implement annual Preserve stewardship work plans and budgets, discerning when projects can be completed in-house
  • Coordinate snow removal in designated areas (parking lots, trailheads, facilities) including operation of snow removal equipment and coordination of other staff and outside contractors
  • Coordinate design professionals and contractors including project bidding, awarding, materials sourcing, construction oversight (compliance with plans, costs, schedules, safety requirements, building codes, and project deadlines)
  • Ensure all Preserve equipment is in proper and safe working order

Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years successful experience in facilities, construction and/or land management required, including site work, snow plowing, landscaping, heavy equipment operation and maintenance, chainsaw use (certification preferred), and small equipment operation and repair
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, schedule, and manage multiple projects
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; Class A CDL license preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Competence in Microsoft Office programs
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills

Salary/Compensation:

  • High $30’s-low $40’s per year based on experience;
