Rangeland Technician (Multiple Locations)

Turner Enterprises, Inc. is a private land management and conservation organization with a mission of managing Turner lands and the surrounding landscapes in an economically sustainable and ecologically sensitive manner while promoting the conservation of native species.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Establishing upland and riparian sampling transects
  • Delineating wetlands
  • Identifying plant species throughout varying ecological communities across Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Kansas, including rare and invasive species.
  • Identifying and describing soil types
  • Collecting qualitative and quantitative vegetation data (including range condition, species density, diversity, frequency, photo points, woody browse, etc.)
  • GIS mapping and monitoring of rare plant populations and invasive species infestations

When not conducting rangeland sampling, successful applicant will work with a small team of biological technicians completing other natural resource work. Secondary responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with stream electrofishing surveys
  • Removing non-native fish
  • Assessing aquatic habitat
  • Restoring native species
  • Surveying amphibian species

This position offers the opportunity to gain diverse and valuable field experience throughout many unique ecosystems while enhancing and expanding existing knowledge across several fields of conservation and land management.

Qualifications: Qualifications preferred for this position include a B.S. in rangeland ecology, botany, or a closely related field. Applicants with applicable work experience, who are working towards a degree, will also be considered. Experience with vegetation surveys and plant identification in short and mixed grass, and sage-steppe plant communities is preferred. Applicants must be willing to work and hike for long hours in varying temperature extremes and must be willing to travel up to two weeks at a time. Aspects of this position will be physically demanding and require that the applicant be able to lift and hike with a 35+ lbs. pack. Experience with GPS and ArcMap software desirable. Additional experience in riparian and aquatic surveys, non-native fish removal, and the use of electrofishing equipment is beneficial but not required. This is a temporary positon beginning 05/08/2017 (semi-flexible) with an approximate end date of 09/08/2017. Hourly wage DOE ($11-$13/hour). Candidates will be based out of Bozeman and must provide their own lodging when in Bozeman. Lodging and meal reimbursement will be provided when traveling outside of Bozeman, and some tent camping may be required.
