Understory Field Technician

Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment

Understory Crew Members will help carry out research on the effects of silvicultural treatments on the ecology of managed forests as part of the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (HEE) near Bloomington, IN. The primary duty for these positions will be to conduct understory surveys including measurement and identification of herbaceous plants and woody seedlings. Sampling of forest insects and moths may also be required at certain times throughout the field season.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in botany, forestry, or related natural resources field
  • Strong plant identification skills
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Willingness to work in extreme conditions, including traversing rugged terrain through dense, thorny shrubs and working in high temperatures and high humidity

Preferred:

  • Experience with plant identification in the Midwest
  • Experience with hand-held GPS units, maps and compass
