Duties:
This position will perform the duties of a general ecologist to enable comprehensive biology support for a variety of District projects and will support existing data collection needs of the Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Unit’s mitigation and monitoring programs, Safe Clean Water Programs and Fisheries and Aquatic Habitat Collaborative Effort Program.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform general habitat assessments and impact evaluations.
  • Conduct various fisheries and wildlife monitoring work including: aquatic sampling surveys, electrofishing, nesting bird surveys and amphibian and reptile surveys.
  • Conduct riparian and wetland monitoring for various mitigation monitoring programs.
  • Provide technical biological expertise to support planning, design and construction phases for various projects to minimize impacts to biological resources.
  • Perform CRAM field data collection for Safe Clean Water (SCW) Priority D5 and habitat mapping for SCW Priority D2.
    Assist with data entry and database management for the unit.
  • Assist with report preparation and data analysis.
  • Assist with equipment management and maintenance.
  • Ideal candidate’s background includes:

Biologist I:

  • One year of experience conducting habitat assessments, impact evaluations, aquatic sampling, wildlife field surveys, botanical field surveys, wetland delineations, CRAM assessments and vegetation mapping is desirable.

Biologist II:

  • Three or more years of experience conducting habitat assessments, impact evaluations, aquatic sampling, wildlife field surveys, botanical field surveys, wetland delineations, CRAM assessments and vegetation mapping is desirable.
  • Ability to lead field crews and/or work independently is desired.
  • Field experience, GIS, database, and technical report writing experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Santa Clara County flora and fauna including local special-status species, native plant communities and invasive species.
  • Various fish and wildlife survey techniques (aquatic sampling, electrofishing, nesting bird surveys, small mammal trapping, etc.).
  • Various vegetation monitoring techniques (transects, quadrats, wetland delineations, etc.).
  • State and Federal laws, permitting and CEQA.
  • GIS and database management.
  • Technical report writing.
  • Multi-disciplinary team involvement- with effective oral and written communication skills and strong critical thinking skills.

Experience:
Biologist I:
None

Biologist II:
Two years of experience performing biological, ecological or other related scientific research.

Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in biological or natural sciences, ecology or a related field. Directly related experience may be substituted for the college requirement on the basis of one and one-half years of experience for one year of education to a maximum of four years.

Special Requirement:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license is required.
