Deadline Aug 02, 2019

At Vermont Land Trust (VLT), a nationally recognized leader in land conservation, we work to make Vermont’s communities and working landscape vital, resilient, and connected. We protect the places that make Vermont special — farms, forests, parks, trails, rivers and more. This conserved landscape provides communities with local food, maple syrup, clean air and water, as well as opportunities for hiking, hunting, and deepening connections to the land – today and in the future.

We have a great opportunity for a talented person with experience in any of the following: farm business planning, farm technical or business advising, and/or operating a commercial farm business. VLT is a national leader and pioneer in farmland access and farmland affordability work. We’ve completed over 100 farm transfers in the past 10 years, serving over 300 farmers. The Farmland Access Program is expanding and needs an experienced team leader to support its growth. As part of this work, the new director will deepen partnerships with mission-aligned local, regional, and national organizations, including supporting  close partnerships with Vermont’s Farm Viability network of business advisors and Vermont’s Farm to Plate Network, as well as engaging with lenders, conservation partners, and others to further our work on farmland access and affordability.

Our new Farmland Access Program Director will:

  • lead and collaborate with staff to support affordable farmland transfers;
  • direct and support the Farmland Access Program team;
  • interact with state and national partners to advance the VLT’s goals for the Farmland Access Program;
  • provide and/or support land access opportunities for new and beginning farmers; and
  • provide and/or support wrap-around business support services to support new farmers and retiring farmers, including succession assistance for retiring farmers (i.e. business planning, financial planning, marketing and sales, etc.)

The ideal candidate has:

  • strong background in a combination of the following: farm business planning, farm technical or business advising, farming experience, and familiarity with farmland conservation;
  • excellent communication and problem-solving skills;
  • strong project management skills;
  • familiarity with conservation easements and affordability mechanisms including the Option to Purchase at Agricultural Value;
  • supervisory or leadership experience; and
  • passion for farming, food systems work, and land conservation.
