The Great Basin Institute is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and service through the west. The Institute’s mission is to advance applied science and ecological literacy through community engagement and agency partnerships, supporting national parks, forest, open spaces and public lands.

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), seeks a Hunting and Conservation Outreach Coordinator to develop and deliver educational programs specifically tailored to increasing the use of non-lead ammunition for improved ecosystem health.

The Coordinator will cooperate with the USFWS Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge Complex and other outreach partners. The incumbent will use existing approaches, and develop new ones, to increase public awareness of lead as a toxin. The Coordinator also leverages partnerships to promote the protection of natural resources, such as the California condor, a well-studied species threatened by preventable lead exposure. Many stakeholders with a variety of perspectives and missions have an interest in issues surrounding non-lead ammunition, requiring diplomatic approaches to facilitate meaningful discussion. Multiple federal, state, and non-profit organizations contribute to these collaborations, and this position will aid in coordinating efforts and information sharing. The Coordinator will travel extensively, building relationships with the hunting community, target shooters, ranchers, wildlife pest controllers, conservation groups, federal and state agencies, and other stakeholders to educate and collaborate in an effort to reach the program goal.

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • In collaboration with USFWS and a network of outreach staff, develop a program framework, including education programming and an outreach strategy;
  • Open dialogs and build relationships to engage the hunting community, target shooters, ranchers, wildlife pest controllers, and federal and state agencies;
  • Organize and coordinate special events and campaigns designed to provide education about the effects of lead on wildlife and to promote non-lead alternatives. These may include activities such as informational events, hunter education classes, firearms and ammunition demonstrations, and public-opinion surveys;
  • Conduct education, outreach and program marketing, including development of program materials;
  • Analyze and evaluate data, create reports, and conduct program evaluation;
  • Communicate effectively and compellingly in verbal, written and graphical forms; speak publicly to various audiences on a regular basis; and
  • May serve in a leadership role for volunteers.


  • Rate of Pay: $20.00/hour;

  • Duration: Annual appointment starting September 1st
  • Full time (40 hours/week); varied schedule depending on field requirements and outreach events

Location:  Based at the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office in Ventura, CA (flexible in the southern California condor range)


  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, communication, public relations or a related field;
  • Experience working in wildlife and/or fisheries fields and experience conducting public presentations, coordinating complex programs and managing resources;
  • Experience in hunting, including extensive knowledge of firearms and ammunition used for hunting;
  • Ability to safely handle and use firearms, oversee volunteers using firearms, and meet routine firearms qualifications;
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to balance and integrate task-oriented and process-oriented responsibilities;
  • Experience leading programs, demonstrating initiative, creativity, organization, motivation, and follow through;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with small and large audiences;
  • Experience with educational planning and program evaluation processes;
  • Record keeping and the use of computers and software related to project and database management;
  • Physical ability to stand and walk for several hours at a time;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds for extended periods of time;
  • Willingness to travel, on average, one week per month and on short notice;
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license and the ability to operate a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads; and
  • Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and the goals of the USFWS.
