Seasonal Rangeland Technician

GMEC is seeking a Rangeland Technician with experience in plant identification and soil classification based out of their Buffalo, WY office. The candidate that is selected will be traveling and sampling rangeland sites throughout the State of Wyoming. Location of these rangeland sites will include Buffalo, WY Casper, WY Cody, WY and Worland, WY. Candidates will need to navigate to the rangeland site using a GPS and a 4-wheel vehicle to collect accurate field data using a Microsoft Tablet. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in plant identification, soil identification and the ability to identify the correct Ecological Site Description (ESD) for the rangeland site. The position will start in May and continue into early September. (Dates Flexible)

Responsibilities

  • Reading maps and using Trimble GPS to find remote locations
  • Collecting accurate field data using a Microsoft tablet
  • Reading and recording line point intercept transects
  • Collect vegetative forage production data by clipping
  • Sampling soils for horizon and texture classification
  • Ability to identify Ecological Site Description (ESD) based on collected vegetation and soil data.

Requirements

  • Experience identifying rangeland plants in Wyoming
  • Experience classifying soil composition and texture
  • Proficient in reading maps
  • Skilled in operating UTVs
  • Willingness to travel and camp overnight across Wyoming

GMEC began operations in 2006 located in Buffalo, Wyoming at the base of the Bighorn Mountains. We started out by providing federal oil and gas permitting and environmental consulting services to the Powder River Basin region of Wyoming and Montana.

Our services include federal and state oil and gas as well as renewable energy permitting; wildlife and T&E species surveys and support; third-party NEPA preparation; rangeland health assessments and monitoring; Storm-Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) creation and inspections; reclamation planning and implementation, wetland delineations; and Proper Functioning Condition (PFC) assessments of streams.

Our team has extensive experience working with private landowners, federal and state entities, and private industry on a variety of natural resource related projects. Several of our employees’ have backgrounds in farming and ranching as well as previous employment with a variety of government agencies including USDA-NRCS, USDA-USFS, WY-DEQ and USDI-BLM which allow GMEC to approach projects with a perspective that facilitates cooperation between the involved parties and aids in the development of plans that are mutually acceptable to all involved.
