Wildlife Veterinarian and Externship Coordinator

Wild Sun Rescue Center- Costa Rica Cabuya, Latin America
Deadline Dec 15, 2018
Job Type Paid permanent

Wild Sun is a non-profit organization located in Cabuya, Costa Rica. We are not only dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of our local wildlife, but also to reintroduction of locally extinct species and other conservation projects. We are currently breeding and reintroducing the Scarlet Macaw, which has been extirpated from the Nicoya Peninsula. Preserving biodiversity and ecosystem balance are at the core of what we do.

We are looking for a full-time, on site veterinarian. You would work alongside Costa Rican licensed veterinarians to treat the animals in our care and lead our vet and pre-vet student externship programs. We care for a wide variety of species, including but not limited to the Mantled Howler Monkey, White Faced Capuchin, Collared Anteater, White Nosed Coati, Lowland Paca, Spotted Skunk, Northern Raccoon, Nine-banded Armadillo, White Tailed Deer, Variegated Squirrel, Mexican Hairy Porcupine, Woolly and Common Opossums, Green Iguana, and a variety of Parrots and other birds. As our veterinarian, you would be the on-site eyes and ears to ensure the welfare of all animals in our care as well as the first line for emergency intakes.

In addition, you would help design and lead our vet and pre-vet student externship program. This would include giving lectures, doing daily patient rounds, and sharing knowledge of local species in our care. You would teach students proper restraint techniques for mammals, birds and reptiles, how to perform physical exams and hands-off evaluations, identify and treat parasites, administer fluids, treat wounds, and perform necropsies. Your role would also include leading onsite labs and demonstrations, student evaluation, and feedback meetings. You would join the externship students on educational outings which could include visiting a local sea turtle protection project, tide pool explorations, whale watching, and participation in a local spay and neuter campaign to help control the local dog and cat population.

You would live on site at Wild Sun - a beautiful, ocean view property with a yoga deck, infinity pool, and various common areas among 5 acres of land next to Cabo Blanco National Park. We have a private chef who will provide all meals except for lunch and dinner on Saturdays. Most dietary needs can be accommodated.
