Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and eager to play a vital part of our renowned conservation effort to save the world's cranes and their habitats? The International Crane Foundation (ICF) is seeking motivated and passionate individuals for multiple openings in our Aviculture Apprenticeship at our International Headquarters in Baraboo, WI. In this role, you will learn through hands-on experience and mentorship by seasoned professionals as you play a fundamental role in the care and management of our resident-flock of around 120 cranes. Many of our existing staff started their careers in this program, and apprentices typically accept full-time positions at other zoos, conservation organizations, and graduate programs at the completion of their apprenticeships.
The position runs for 12 months starting in September/October 2026, with some flexibility in start and end dates. It includes a stipend of $1,550/month plus housing. About the Role
As an Aviculture Apprentice, you'll gain hands-on experience in crane care, breeding, and conservation. You'll learn essential crane husbandry skills such as feeding, cleaning, and facilities maintenance. You will also assist with behavioral observations, enrichment & training, and invasive species vegetation management. Additionally, you will participate in artificial insemination, egg incubation, and chick rearing. During summer months, you'll engage with visitors during keeper chats and tours on-site in our Crane Discovery Center.
The work week is 40-50 hours with two consecutive days off. Weekend and holiday work is required. Some tasks may include early mornings, evenings, or night checks. This role demands a strong work ethic, adaptability, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a degree or at least two years of college experience in an environmental, biological, or zoological field, along with demonstrated animal care experience, preferably working with avian species or in a zoo-keeping role. The position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to confidently engage with visitors. Candidates must demonstrate a reliable and committed work ethic, including flexibility to adapt to a varied schedule and the ability to work long hours outdoors in all weather conditions. A valid driver's license and eligibility to work in the United States are also required. The role is physically demanding and involves working outdoors in diverse weather conditions, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing or walking for extended periods of time.
