Jobs are currently on USAjobs.gov here through October 5, 2026, and be sure to select Mammoth Lakes, Bishop, or Lone Pine as one of your choices. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of the deadline because last-minute applicants often inundate the server, which prevents application submission hours before the deadline.
If Inyo NF is your top choice among other Forests, please go to this link and complete the survey. It is important to fill-out this survey because your Inyo NF job rankings will allow Inyo NF hiring managers to offer the job and location that you most prefer; we want you to be happy working for Inyo NF.
While creating your 2-page resume, be sure to include exact start/end dates down to the day of the month of your previous jobs. If you do not, human resource specialists cannot determine whether you have met minimum specialized experience requirements. This is the #1 disqualifier of qualifed candidates. See links below for additional guidance.
This application is initially self-certifying for job qualifications. Only after you have accepted the tentative job offer, Human Resources will verify your qualifications. If you do not meet qualifications, the Forest Service will rescind the tentative job offer. By that time, it may be too late for the Inyo NF hiring manager to offer the job to another candidate, and the position will remain vacant for the season. Consequently, please be certain you meet the qualifications.
Requirements for GS-0462 (Forestry Technician) series.
- GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
- GS-6: 1 year of specialized experience (technician job in fields listed above) equivalent to GS-5
- GS-7: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-6
Requirements for GS-1001 (General Arts and Information) series.
- GS-5: 1 year specialized experience (e.g., visitor information specialist) equivalent to at least GS-4, or 4 years education above high school
Requirements for GS-0102 (Social Science Technician) series
- GS-5: 1 year specialized experience (e.g., archeology technician) equivalent to at least GS-4, or 4 years education above high school
The hiring process will occur very quickly. After the annoucement closes, shortly thereafter (check daily after Oct 5), you will get an interest check e-mail (most likely from SM.FS.TempHire@usda.gov) requiring you to rank your duty stations and provide reference e-mails, who will be sent a general reference check e-form to be filled-out. Be sure your reference completes this form as soon as possible because hiring managers usually will not consider a candidate unless there are references.
You should rank Inyo NF duty locations at the top of your list because Inyo NF hiring managers will likely just focus on candidates who rank Inyo NF in their Top 2. In addition, if 2 forests are interested in you, your lower ranked forest typically defers to your higher ranked forest. Job offers will occur between October 21 to 27, and job start dates will be between November 15, 2026, to December 27, 2026, and can last for up to 6 months.
Good luck!
