Nature's Classroom Instructor
Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum
carrollton, Ohio
The Opportunity
Nature's Classroom is seeking six enthusiastic Outdoor Education Instructors for our fall season. We offer 2-4day residential programs, day programs, and school visits, all built around a custom curriculum designed to meet the needs of each group. No prior nature-education teaching experience is required. As long as you're excited to learn, we'll teach you everything you need to know.
What You'll Do
Each instructor is assigned a field group of 12-16 students (typically 6th graders) and leads hands-on, activity-based programming throughout their stay. Your day-to-day will include:
- Teaching outdoor classes aligned with middle school educational standards
- Leading interpretive nature hikes
- Presenting live animal ambassadors and interpreting pelts, skulls, and other natural artifacts in the nature center
- Facilitating team-building experiences that promote respect, personal growth, and challenge by choice
- Leading campfire programs, night hikes, and large group games
- Eating meals with your group and supporting students throughout the day
- Working with groups on the high ropes course and climbing tower (as needed)
- Collaborating with fellow educators to support student learning and development
Compensation & Perks
- Starting pay: $485/week
- Free housing in the on-site staff house, which includes a full kitchen, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, and laundry facilities
- Meals provided when students are at camp
- Optional weekend work available for additional pay
- Use of camp equipment during your free time
- Weekends off to explore the surrounding area, including nearby hiking and outdoor recreation
- Extensive training provided before the season begins
What Sets Us Apart
You don't supervise students at night. Our staff lives separately in a large, comfortable staff house, not in student dorms. When the day is done, your time is your own.
You choose what you teach. We have a library of lesson plans to choose from each week, and you're encouraged to develop your own. Science, history, art, survival skills - if you're excited about it, it serves the students, and it fits our lesson style, we want you to run with it.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma
- Experience working with children
- Ability to pass a background check
What We're Looking For
- A passion for the outdoors and environmental stewardship
- Creativity and initiative
- Interest in educating and leading middle school students
- A commitment to your own professional and personal growth
