Assistant Group Leader

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment is looking for a resourceful individual with excellent leadership skills and backcountry experience to lead a group of high school-aged students in a variety of restoration and resource management projects for its Plumas Conservation Restoration & Education in Watersheds (P-CREW) program. P-CREW is designed to provide natural resource work and educational experiences for 10th-12th grade urban and rural teens while supporting restoration efforts on the Plumas and Lassen National Forests, and other nearby lands. The Assistant Group Leader will be responsible for working with the Group Leader to manage a diverse group of 12 urban and rural teenagers, including one alumni assistant, for two five-week sessions. The Assistant Group Leader will work with numerous resource professionals, under the guidance of Sierra Institute’s P-CREW Coordinators. This is an exciting chance to be a part P-CREW’s third field season of land restoration. The Assistant Group Leader will be an experienced outdoor professional, and with the skills and interests to serve as an excellent role model with an exemplary work ethic.

The Sierra Institute is located in rural Taylorsville, California surrounded by millions of acres of national forest that will be the Assistant Group Leader’s home for the majority of the summer. The Assistant Group Leader will be camping in the field with program participants; tent space will be provided during training and close out. Salary for the Assistant Group Leader is $630 per week (with the opportunity to earn more DOE) for the 10 week summer field season, and $400 for training and close out weeks. Meals are provided during the field season. This position will be a part of a crew of three summer field staff.

Required Qualifications

-Wilderness First Aid certification

-Clean driving record with the ability to safely drive a large SUV or 6 passenger pickup truck with teenagers on dirt roads

-College or advanced degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation Leadership or related field

-Previous field work experience

-Positive attitude with a sense of humor and the ability to keep a group of teenagers motivated in a variety of adverse (hot, dry, rainy, itchy) conditions

-Comfortable working with a diverse group of 10th-12th grade participants in unpredictable back and front country settings

-Capable and willing to assume full responsibility for group of twelve 16-18 year olds, and willing to work long hours, 24 hours a day/6 days per week in the field and at camp.  You will receive one day off a week.

-Teambuilding facilitation experience

Desired Qualifications:

-Wilderness First Responder

-Current Lifeguard certification

-Experience working with teenagers (ideally, 16-18 year olds)

-Prior backcountry experience

-Prior conservation corps experience

-Experience managing a camp kitchen

Responsibilities and Duties- Including but not limited to:

-Meal planning and teaching teens cooking skills

-Capturing before and after photos of project and taking pictures of the crew at work and camp

-Teaching students and ensuring that they maintain a safe and clean camp

-Delivering educational lessons while following a curriculum

-Leading recreation trips on weekends

-Conducting personal check-ins with crew members and staff

-Excellent time management skills

- Safely driving crews to and from work and camp sites

-Weekly debriefs with P-CREW Coordinator(s)

-Administering first aid and keeping detailed records

Tentative start and end dates:  June 1, 2017- August 25, 2017
