Sustainable Shoreline Educator

SCA Hudson Valley AmeriCorps partners with State and non-profit agencies to address the conservation needs of the Hudson River Watershed region. Corps members are placed at individual host sites, where service activities range from providing environmental education to underserved youth, to restoring streambanks along the Hudson River, and beyond. Members join together regularly for trainings, service projects, or other events. 
 
Member Position Summary:
Assist in the development and delivery of estuary education programs targeted at the general public and collaborating environmental organizations.  Specific topics may include shoreline restoration, nature-based shoreline protection, estuarine and shoreline habitats and sea level rise, as well as communicating about environmental issues, behavior change and collaborative learning. Assist with assessment and inventory of shoreline resources.  Be part of a dynamic dedicated team of professionals leading education, stewardship and research activities in the Hudson Estuary.  Work with many professionals from Hudson Valley environmental organizations. Assist with and attend a variety of workshops on environmental and professional development topics. Work at a scenic Hudson River location at a fully equipped o?ce and environmental center.
 
Essential Functions of Position:

  • Help carry out the outreach and communication strategy of the sustainable shorelines project, including integration with other state programs.   Create educational materials for public audiences about the beneficial habitat characteristics of shorelines, shoreline restoration, best management practices and other findings of the sustainable shorelines project.  Create brochures, website material and kiosk posters. Disseminate information at public presentations, educational events and shoreline stakeholder meetings. Speak at appropriate educational events about the sustainable shoreline project.  (34%)
  • Carry out a bi-annual  assessment of the innovative shoreline projects. (1%)
  • Assist in developing and delivering educational forums for the general public and collaborating environmental organizations on topics such as communication of environmental issues, behavior change and collaborative learning,  shoreline and Hudson River habitat protection, climate resilience and sea level rise. Duties include developing content, finding appropriate expert speakers, identifying audiences, managing database of partners, assisting with outreach events, managing evaluative data, creating informational resources and maintaining educational website.  (35%)
  • Assist Education and Research Programs with field, education, and canoe trip programs as needed (15%)
  • Participate in all SCA Corps-wide trainings and service projects. Completion of AmeriCorps reporting requirements including bi-weekly timesheets, monthly reports, pre/post tests for any education provided, evaluations at the beginning, mid-point, and end of term.  (15%)

 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Preferred: Desire to build knowledge of new topics and issues, interest in the social science of environmental issues, self -directed and ?exible, knowledge of climate change, and estuary ecology. Experience with canoes and/or kayaks.
 
Required Academic and Experience Qualifications:
Coursework, experience or passion for environmental sciences, ecology, biology or natural resources or related field. Course work in communications and psychology would be helpful. MS Word, MS Excel, excellent organizational, oral and written communication, and computer skills. Education and outreach experience. Experience with website design and maintenance is desired. Experience with Geographic Positioning Systems, Geographic Information Systems is desired. Personal transportation is necessary.
