POSITION SUMMARY:

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a full-time senior campaigner or senior advocate in New Mexico to advance our state level work to end oil and gas production.  This position is located in New Mexico.

General position overview:

The Climate Law Institute wages innovative legal and grassroots campaigns to protect people, wildlife and ecosystems from climate change and the fossil fuel industry. We work at every level, including international, federal, state, and local campaigns. We seek a senior campaigner/advocate to develop and lead our state organizing to swiftly and justly phase out oil and gas production in New Mexico. The senior campaigner/advocate will work closely with a dynamic team of legal, science, organizing, and communications staff, as well as colleagues at allied organizations, advocating to keep oil and gas in the ground in New Mexico as science demands.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Main duties:

  • Developing and implementing state-level campaign strategies to move New Mexico toward a phase-out of oil and gas production.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with coalition allies working together to achieve our common goals, including through regular in-person, phone, and electronic communication. We prioritize policy goals that center justice and ensure an equitable transition off fossil fuels for communities and workers.
  • Forming strategic relationships with new allies to increase our mutual power. We are committed to upholding environmental justice principles and recognize that social, economic and environmental issues are interconnected. We work closely with environmental justice organizations and communities on the frontlines of fossil fuel production and harm.
  • Organizing and promoting participation in legislative advocacy, hearings, protests, and other advocacy efforts.
  • Coordinating excellent communication between staff throughout the organization regarding campaign activities and goals.
  • Expanding recruitment and engagement of Center supporters in New Mexico.
  • Travel required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • At least eight years of experience in results-oriented coalition organizing and advocacy campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and organizations with a wide array of goals, perspectives, and backgrounds. Commitment to incorporating principles of justice, equity, and inclusion into all aspects of the work.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully navigate challenges, including from a powerful and well-resourced opposition.
  • Proficiency in digital organizing strategy including: building digital ladders of engagement for supporters; engaging supporters using email, text, and social media; and collaborating with frontline partners on digital communications.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment with a full workload where it is necessary to balance multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent analytic, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within New Mexico and outside the state as needed.

Preferred qualifications, skills, and qualities:

  • Existing relationships and experience working with grassroots organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. We especially encourage candidates who hold first-hand experience or meaningful, trusted relationships with communities impacted by fossil fuel production and environmental racism.
  • Proficiency in creative direct action organizing including: strategic action design, participant training and recruitment, art and props production, marshaling a crowd, and overseeing action logistics from start to finish.
  • Proficiency building out and maintaining social media engagement via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other channels.
  • Proficiency in relationship management software such as EveryAction, ActionKit, and Action Network.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and visual strategy for key documents and campaign materials (e.g., social media graphics, web graphics, ad graphics, written reports, posters/banners, stickers, t-shirts).
  • Experience with media outreach and media interviews.
