The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is an international conservation organization founded in 1948 to conserve and restore wild Atlantic salmon and their ecosystems. ASF is headquartered in St. Andrews, NB, Canada and maintains offices in Brunswick Maine, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. Through ASF's membership and affiliated volunteer network, the organization represents more than 25,000 individuals who share ASF's commitment to wild rivers and wild salmon.

Overview

To ensure the financial integrity and sustainability of the organization by managing day-to-day accounting functions, overseeing the finances of grants and restricted funds, supporting budget development, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit financial regulations. This role plays a key part in enabling the organization to fulfill its conservation mission by providing accurate financial insights and supporting transparent, responsible stewardship of donors and grant funds.

Responsibilities and Duties

In this role, your responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Accounts Payable US - process, approve and pay invoices. Includes physically cut and mail checks, transfers, etc.    
  • Deposit and / or Post deposits 
  • Assist with grant management – setting up new grants, connecting transactions
  • Assist with restricted accounts - ensuring things are posted and in the right place
  • Assist with W-9s, 1099s and COIs for consultants
  • Help with grant financial reports and financials for grant applications as needed.
  • Interact with US Office and Finance office and outside consultants to learn, prepare and execute single audit, as well as adjust internal policy and procedures.
  • US HR Support 
  • Help with the Penobscot Restoration Trust Financials
  • Preparing journal entries deposits, corrections
  • Maintain Centre suite Visa platform and post monthly cardholder expenses
  • Bank, Payroll & Investment reconciliations
  • Assist in budget preparation
  • Payroll for US

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 Decision Making: This role calls for good judgment in handling budgets, grants, and expenses, making sure everything lines up with the organization’s goals and funding rules. The person should be able to spot issues, make quick calls when needed, and help guide smart financial choices that keep conservation efforts running smoothly.

Attention to detail – to catch errors in reports, budgets, or compliance docs
Communication – to clearly explain financial matters to non-finance staff
Resourcefulness – to find solutions and streamline processes

Job specific experience and skills that will help you in this role include:

  • Accounting software proficiency – Blackbaud Financial Edge, Quickbooks, or similar.
  • Excel/Google Sheets – advanced skills, formulas, and data analysis
  • Budget creation and management – including multi-year budgets and grant-specific tracking
  • Fund accounting – especially managing restricted/unrestricted funds
  • Grant financial reporting – understanding funder requirements and compliance
  • Journal entries and reconciliations – handling deposits, payroll, and account balancing
  • Payroll systems – processing and tracking payroll, taxes, and benefits
  • Audit preparation – organizing financial data and documentation for annual audits
  • Online banking and financial platforms – managing transfers, reconciliations, and card expenses

Education and Experience: Associates or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Bookkeeping or Business Admin preferred. However, we understand that competence and skill can come from a diversity of experiences as well as education. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
