Azura is seeking an Acoustic Analyst with experience in cetacean acoustics to support the Protected Species Division of the NOAA Fisheries Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC).

Background

The applicant will need to be a self-driven professional with experience in acoustic analysis and be prepared to step into the role quickly and work effectively from the start with minimal supervision.

Place of Performance and Work Schedule

Work is expected to be remote or performed at the NEFSC facility in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Work is full-time (40 hours per week, Monday through Friday) and expected to last approximately 6 months with the possibility of an extension. During workdays, candidates must be able to respond to all communications within 24 hours and conduct calls and meetings as necessary during normal business hours. Travel will be required (3+ trips / year). This position is not open to visa sponsorship or relocation assistance.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Rate: $25.25/hour depending on skills, education, and work experience

Duties

  • Acoustic analysis of odontocetes such as dolphins, sperm whales, and harbor porpoises
  • Acoustic analysis of baleen whales may also be required
  • Acoustic analysis of soundscapes and ambient noise metrics
  • Occasional participation in passive acoustic field work and travel to meetings

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. degree in a relevant field of study
  • One or more years of experience with research analysis (preferably passive acoustic data analysis) or in a graduate program
  • Excellent reading comprehension and scientific writing skills
  • Ability to multitask and work with short deadlines
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain a Public Trust Clearance which requires passing a thorough background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Ecosound, PAMGuard, Raven(Pro), PyPAM, and/or R software (programming language)
