Position Title: After School Nature Club Assistant Teacher
Status: Regular Part-Time, ~20 hours/week (Mon–Fri, approx. 2–6 PM)
Start Date: August 20, 2025
Pay: $16.48 /hour

Hartley Nature Center is hiring a part-time Assistant Teacher to join our After School Nature Club (ASNC) team! This program blends outdoor play, nature exploration, and social-emotional learning for elementary-aged children. We’re looking for a warm, dependable educator who loves being outside, is skilled at working with students with diverse needs, and can help create a safe, supportive after-school environment.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys connecting with kids, building community, and working closely with a collaborative team of environmental educators.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support the Lead Teacher in supervising and engaging a group of K-5th grade students
  • Build strong, positive relationships with students and help foster a welcoming group dynamic
  • Assist with delivery of environmental education activities, hikes, games, and crafts
  • Help guide student behavior using positive, trauma-informed strategies
  • Participate in daily risk assessment and uphold all safety protocols
  • Communicate with the Lead Teacher about student needs, incidents, and family updates
  • Provide input during team check-ins and staff meetings

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children in a school, camp, after-school, or similar setting
  • Ability to support students with behavioral or sensory needs in a kind, consistent way
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit
  • Must pass a background check
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in environmental education or outdoor programs
  • Familiarity with mixed-age groups or inclusive learning environments
  • Spanish or Ojibwe language skills 
    • Multiple students are enrolled in language immersion schools. 

Hours & Scheduling:

This is a school-year position following the Duluth Public Schools calendar. Approximate hours are 2:00–6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Additional hours may be available for special events or non-school day programming. Opportunities for summer employment may also be available.
