Appalachian Trail Outreach Steward - Position Overview:

  • Location: The Maine section of the Appalachian Trail (working from a home office, in Maine, with outreach to various locations including along the Appalachian Trail.)
  • Duration: January until the end of August 2026
  • Service Hours: 1,200 hours

Key Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer Recruitment and Support: Recruit and support volunteer groups engaged in Appalachian Trail work. Maintain a volunteer database to match volunteers with experienced trail maintainers and partner organizations.
  • Project Coordination: Help organize trail projects that involve high school, college, summer camp, underserved youth and adult groups. Examples include building bog bridges, tent platforms, and trimming brush.
  • Alpine Education Program: Implement an educational program that includes off-trail presentations and guided hikes on Saddleback and Bigelow Mountains. Collaborate with MATC’s seasonal Ridgerunners to deliver program content.
  • Outdoor Ethics Program: Lead outdoor ethics hikes and indoor workshops for children and adults at various locations promoting Leave No Trace principles and environmental awareness.
  • Recordkeeping and Communication: Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours and release forms. Contribute to internal and external communications, including reports, evaluations, and social media content.

  • Experience in volunteer management and community outreach
  • Strong backcountry camping and hiking skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in social media and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Passion, knowledge and experience for the outdoors and environmental conservation
