The Illinois River Biological Station is seeking up to 3 Aquatic/Fisheries Crew Lead field technicians to conduct applied research in invasive species management and aquatic ecology in large river systems throughout the state of Illinois, focusing on the Mississippi River. Technicians will lead field sampling and lab crews in the collection and analysis of standardized long-term river monitoring data, invasive fish early life history detection, age and growth studies, acoustic telemetry, electrofishing, and additional targeted data collection. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be based in Macomb, Illinois. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor's degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology, or a biological-related field. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and a strong ability to swim. Candidates must have experience with field collection protocols, and safety protocols concerning fieldwork and data collection, and must have experience in leading field crews in aquatic habitats.  Experience with large boats, outboard motors, trailers, and four-wheel drive vehicles, along with other fisheries, water quality, and related field equipment is preferred. Experience with standardized long-term river monitoring (LTRM) sampling protocols, knowledge of the Mississippi River Basin, and training in boater safety and laboratory safety is also preferred. The candidate will both assist with and lead contracted fishing boat crews, night fish sampling crews, boat acoustic telemetry crews, crews deploying other appropriate gear types, and sample processing in a laboratory setting. The candidate will also be expected to perform field station maintenance duties when needed and must be comfortable working in the field and lab both solo and as a team. Experience with active communication within large interagency team settings is preferred. This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, long days, nights, and possible weekends.                

Salary: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour, depending on experience                                                

Available:  May 1 – October 31, 2024, with a potential extension to December 2024 and beyond.  The starting date can be adjusted slightly depending on the candidate’s availability, including a potential starting date before May 1.
