Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group (MSFEG), a nonprofit based in Seattle, has an exciting part-time temporary position for someone who is passionate about working with diverse youth to restore salmon habitat. Taking direction from the crew lead, this assistant crew leader position will help provide hands-on restoration training to a crew of 8 high school-aged students looking to enter the environmental field.

Position Title: Assistant Youth Crew Leader
Supervised by: Crew Leader and Restoration Project Manager
Part-time Temporary: 24 hours per week, July 7th- August 28th, 2025 with in person orientation on July 3rd.
Pay Rate: $23 per hour.
Work Location: Public Parks in Auburn, Washington.
Working Conditions: This position includes daily field work Monday-Thursday with occasional off site field trips.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • 1+ years relevant work experience in riparian restoration.
  • Ability to work with diverse youth in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Ability to provide youth with instructions and feedback on restoration techniques in a thoughtful, patient, and educational manner.
  • Ability to stay motivated while working outside four days a week in the summer.
  • Ability to perform physical labor including bending, lifting, hiking, wading in streams, and
    working safely with tools in most weather conditions, including rain.
  • Ability to think on your feet and adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Ability to take direction and work with the crew leader to create a positive work environment.
  • Ability to pass a state background check.
  • Ability to work outside from 9am-3pm 4 days a week in the summer.
  • Ability to foster a positive work environment for high school-aged youth.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • On-the-ground experience in riparian restoration techniques and basic knowledge of Western Washington native and invasive plants and Pacific Northwest ecosystems.
  • Organized and self-motivated with a strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of Pacific salmon species and associated life histories and ecological impacts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Daily field work with Youth

  • Assist the crew leader in teaching restoration skills and plant identification to crew members.
  • Remain professional at all times and lead by example.
  • Ensure the site is cleaned up at the end of each day, all tools are accounted for, and the work log is completed.
  • Ensure all work is completed in a safe manner.
  • Motivate crew members to work hard throughout the day to ensure they reach daily and weekly restoration goals.
  • Manage the crew when the crew leader is performing weekly one-on-one check-ins with the crew members.
  • Assist the crew leader with all other duties as assigned.
