Position Summary

The Center for Applied Environmental Law and Policy (CAELP) is seeking an Associate Attorney to support our work advancing strong climate and public health regulations and developing creative responses to administrative law obstacles to environmental policy. This is a 2-year position. The Associate Attorney will work closely with CAELP colleagues to support innovation and progress on critical questions of law and policy, help lead the development of legal and technical analysis, and engage with the broader coalitions and partners working in these areas. The Associate Attorney will report to a Senior Attorney leading CAELP’s work on the Major Questions Doctrine and other administrative law issues.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Collaborate with CAELP colleagues to advance strong climate and public health protections, with a particular focus on the electric power, transportation, and industrial sectors
  • Assist with research and drafting for legal briefs, articles, and memoranda advocating for federal agency authority to address large-scale, complex problems, with a focus on the Major Questions Doctrine
  • Work with team members to advise CAELP and outside partners on best practices and strategies in defending federal agency actions in litigation and pre-litigation settings
  • Work with team members to develop new strategies to better defend federal agency actions in litigation
  • Track cases and administrative law issues across all courts in the United States, with a focus on the Major Questions Doctrine
  • Present findings to CAELP and outside partners at in-person and virtual meetings
  • Work with colleagues to meet urgent needs related to other CAELP efforts when necessary

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • 0-3 years of post-law school professional experience, legal or public policy experience preferred
  • Demonstrated legal writing and research skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and think creatively 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal administrative law

Salary and Benefits

CAELP offers competitive salaries, benefits, and a supportive fully-remote working environment. The starting salary range for the 2-year Associate Attorney position is $75,000-90,000, commensurate with experience.
