About Sierra Streams Institute: Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) is a watershed monitoring, research, restoration and educational group based in Nevada City, California, located in the Sierra Nevada foothills.  Our mission is to promote scientific knowledge and stewardship of Sierra Nevada watersheds through research, restoration, education, and community science. Over the past two decades, SSI has grown to become a vitally important voice in the regional scientific community.

At SSI, we utilize a science-based approach to work on behalf of environmental and human health. Many of our projects entail working directly with citizen scientists to collect water quality, benthic macroinvertebrates (BMI), algae, wildlife, and physical habitat data. BMI are important indicators of creek health, and SSI’s BMI Lab supports our mission by sorting and identifying BMI samples from creeks and rivers throughout the Northern Sierra. 

Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) is seeking two temporary, part time technicians to work in their in-house BMI Lab. The BMI Lab Technician will report directly to the BMI Lab Manager, and will assist with processing and sorting BMI samples collected by field crews. The ideal candidate has a knack for analytical, sometimes repetitive tasks and can work for at least 4 hours a day at a microscope. All training will be provided on-site, but experience with BMI ID and/or using a microscope is desired. 

• Job Responsibilities include: 
• Sort BMI samples to the taxonomic level of Order in the BMI Lab
• Complete quality control requirements on BMI samples
• Complete all sample documentation in lab logs and records
• Assist with data entry
• Start date and hours: We are looking for two part time techs to start in early October and work 20 hours per week for a period of at least 4 months. 
• Wage will be $20-24 per hour, commensurate with experience.
