Night Sky Conservationist
Boise State University/Bruneau Dunes State Park/Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve
Position Summary:
Among elements of Boise State’s mission is to engage the public in taxpayer-funded science. To help further this mission, the Night Sky Conservationist AmeriCorps Member will work very closely with Bruneau Dunes SP staff to develop educational materials and outreach partnerships. In addition, the member would help develop astronomical observing procedures for using the new observatory at Bruneau Dunes. They will coordinate monthly STEAM programs, build volunteer capacity for education initiatives, support education programs, and plan outreach events and partnership activities at the park.
Member Activities/Duties:
- Extensive training in light pollution, astronomical observing, and data analysis.
- Research and develop pedagogical materials and work with park staff to understand the park needs.
- Conduct surveys to gauge public understanding and interest in light pollution mitigation.
- Create detailed documentation of light pollution in and around Bruneau.
- Create pedagogical materials tailored for visitors to the park.
- Implement observational procedures to determine how to maximize the use of Bruneau’s observatory.
- Develop outreach materials for park visitors.
- Deliver interpretive and educational programming and presentations to park and reserve visitors.
- Collect and analyze light pollution data.
- Support Bruneau Dunes SP’s summer stargazing program events.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident.
- Must possess high school diploma or equivalent or commit to earning one prior to receiving award.
- Must be fluent in English.
- Must be able to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
- Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check provided through PCEI.
- Must complete and submit all necessary PCEI AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
- Must commit to, attend, and complete all PCEI AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings, and National Service Days.
- Must wear AmeriCorps uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.
Preferred Skills:
- Basic knowledge of astronomy
- Public speaking experience
- Knowledge of astronomical observing and data analysis techniques
Member Benefits Include:
- A taxable, monthly living allowance totaling $22,200 for an 11-month/1700-hour term.
- Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members receive an education award in the amount of $7,395 that can be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade school.
- Loan forbearance – after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable.

Project Location/Transportation Needs: 1910 University Drive, Boise ID 83725. Members are responsible for their own transportation to and from the project location. Frequent travel to Bruneau Dunes SP is required.
Dates of Service: Full-time: 11-months between October 2025 and August 2026.
