Summary of Position
The Camp Director will work in collaboration with Oceana Conservation District staff, volunteers, supporters, and partner organizations to promote the District’s mission by developing and delivering a summer day camp program for the Oceana Conservation District and the community it serves. The Camp Director reports to the District Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate, and implement nature day camps, incorporating activities related to the conservation of and appreciation for forests, farmlands, wetlands, and wildlife of Oceana County.
- Schedule, train, supervise and evaluate camp counselors and volunteers.
- Access and use data in existing database for campers, families, volunteers and alumni.
- Coordinate ordering of necessary equipment and supplies for camp programs, working within an established budget and utilizing current supply inventory.
- Work collaboratively with all camp staff to deliver camp programming.
- Provide regular reports to the Board of Directors with camp program updates and achievements.
Education/Experience/Skills Required
- Degree in education, science, natural resources, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Previous experience in environmental education or interpretation with school-aged children preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge and/or experience with outdoor classroom management.
- Must be able to be a self-starter and work independently.
- Strong organizational and management skills.
- Excellent oral, public presentation, and communication skills.
- Excellent social and interpersonal skills; ability to relate positively with people of different ages, cultures and abilities.
- Knowledge of local natural history and ecology.
- Ability to lead groups over varying terrain in all weather conditions.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace programs.
- Current certification, or willingness to become certified in CPR and basic first aid.
- Currently holds and maintains a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
Employment Classification and Work Schedule
- Position is a seasonal FSLA exempt position based on approximately 30 hours per week during camp programming.
- Schedule to be determined in coordination with the District Manager and Educator and will vary according to position and needs of the Oceana Conservation District camp programs.
- Must be available to work flexible hours based on camp schedule.
- Position works from the Conservation District office in Shelby, MI unless approved to work from home by the Board of Directors.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary: Up to $5000 for the 2026 season, based on program commitment.
- Expense reimbursement.
