Analyzes video to extract data on the identification, abundance and sizes of animals found in deep sea communities. Merges these data with conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) and tracking data. Participates in all aspects of preparing and submitting these data for inclusion in national databases, such as the National Deep Sea Coral Database. Uses complex custom Excel formulas, database products, and macros to populate elements and fields in the most efficient manner for the project that will be submitted for use by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) agencies. Assists with updating online deep sea animal guides with new images of animals that may be encountered during video annotation. Verifies data is accurate and complete. Identifies inconsistent data and outliers, and tracks missing data.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Zoology, Biology, Oceanography, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE One to three (1-3) years of experience developing metadata for biological datasets. Experience annotating, extracting, and querying knowledge based animal databases. Experience annotating and extracting data from underwater video.

KNOWLEDGE Knowledge and experience in biology and identification of deep water animals from ROV or submersible video. Proficient working within a networked computer environment. Efficiency working within national database environments.

ABILITIES & SKILLS Ability to use standard computer software used in science such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, and internet access programs. Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new database standards to select data sets. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially in an academic setting. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely (e.g., telework) as applicable. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet and maintain U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a Federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Laboratory experience preserving samples. Knowledge of deep-sea animal identification and taxonomy. Experience working with Darwin Core data standards and video annotation platforms such as VARS and Tator. Knowledge and experience ingesting biological data sets in Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) and other national/regional tools. Ability to code effectively and efficiently. Ability to troubleshoot coding and software issues. Geographic Information System (GIS) computer experience.
