Civil Engineer – New York

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking a self-motivated, experienced civil engineer in our Syracuse, New York field office. The successful applicant will join a highly motivated conservation team of biologists and engineers who are responsible for the planning, design and construction of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. Primary responsibilities will be in New York with opportunities to work in surrounding states. Qualifications

Candidates must have, at minimum, a B.S in Civil Engineering or an equivalent degree from an EAC/ABET accredited engineering program and 5 years of experience in civil engineering design. Applicant must be a registered professional engineer with the ability to obtain registrations in assigned states. Desirable qualifications include experience with Civil3D, hydrology, hydraulics, civil design including grading, water control structure design, erosion control, construction inspection, and project management. Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential. Candidates must be self-motivated, goal oriented and able to work with and solve problems in close team-based relationships. 

Responsibilities

Ducks Unlimited Civil Engineers perform a full range of project planning, design, contracting, and construction management functions on wetland, riparian, and associated habitat restoration projects. Project delivery responsibilities include scoping and proposal development, engineering design, project bidding, field inspection, and construction management. Typical project designs include earthen dams and spillways, water level control structures, gates, rip rap, culverts, creative borrow/grading, and repair/retrofit of any of the preceding. A close working relationship with local, state and federal personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners will be an important aspect of the job. The position will include occasional travel.

Specific duties may include:

  1. Preparation of proposal scope of work and budgets in close coordination with biological staff serving as project managers.
  2. Interpretation, selection, adaptation, and application of engineering, surveying, and construction management principles and practices across a range of engineering services within conservation and mitigation programs.
  3. Completion of engineering designs and reports as required.
  4. Preparation of project plans (including plan production in Civil 3D), technical specifications, and cost estimates. 
  5. Attendance at project meetings and supporting development of permit application packages with relevant engineering information and documentation.
  6. Conducting field inspection and performing construction management oversight as needed (occasional).
  7. Ensuring that consultants and contractors adhere to project plans, specifications, and schedules.
  8. Acting as contracting officer, ensuring contract compliance, and managing project budgets.
  9. Assisting with occasional field work, as required, which could include strenuous outdoor activity in difficult environmental conditions. Must be able to operate ATV and outboard boat when necessary.
