Coastal Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator

The Coastal Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for conducting and supporting coastal bird outreach, education, and stewardship activities across Mobile and Baldwin Counties. They will also be responsible for the recruitment and coordination of coastal program volunteers. This position is an exempt, full-time, regular position and reports to the Coastal Outreach Manager.
Founded in 1946, Alabama Audubon is a staffed chapter of the National Audubon Society. It is the state’s leading nonprofit promoting conservation and a greater knowledge of birds, their habitats, and the natural world. As the primary Audubon chapter for most of Alabama, it provides a variety of services to the state’s birds and the public, including field trips, adult courses, support for researchers and educators, scientific research, habitat restoration, and coastal bird stewardship and monitoring. We are an independent 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Birmingham, with satellite offices in Greensboro and at the coast.
Essential functions of the Coastal Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator:
- Develop and implement year-round outreach and educational events to groups of all ages including but not limited to bird walks, summer nature camps, and beach clean ups.
- Create and deliver effective public presentations to various groups aimed at engaging local communities in coastal bird conservation and awareness.
- Tabling at festivals, expos, markets, and other local and regional events.
- Keep detailed and accurate records of outreach and stewardship events, engagements, and volunteer hours.
- Steward and assist with monitoring nesting, loafing, and foraging birds; assist in posting symbolic fencing at bird colonies during the summer breeding season.
- Collect data on human use of beaches and impacts on beach nesting birds.
- Interact with the public to perform onsite education promoting conservation of and discouraging disturbance to resting and nesting birds.
- Recruit, train, and oversee coastal program volunteers.
- Assist with development of volunteer training materials, volunteer management database, and volunteer appreciation efforts.
- Assist with social media content creation and volunteer newsletters.
- Assist with keystone coastal program events including but not limited to Alabama Coastal BirdFest, Sandpiper Sprint 5K, Okploverfest, and membership events.
- Under the supervision of the Coastal Outreach Manager, build relationships within coastal communities and with partners.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- A deep commitment to Alabama Audubon’s mission, and to the inclusive philosophy upon which our organization is based.
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Resources or a related discipline and 1-2 years of professional experience preferred (extensive experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree).
- Experience with outreach and education in a natural resources field and experience with, or a willingness to learn more about, North American bird life.
- Experience working with, coordinating, and training volunteers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional skills for working effectively with a diverse group of people.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain organized records.
- Proficiency with MS Office and social media platforms required, experience with Adobe and Canva beneficial.
- Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work comfortably in a dynamic, non-structured environment both independently and as part of a team.
- A positive, team-oriented attitude and a comfort working with a range of personality types.
- Flexible schedule, with a willingness to work long hours outside in harsh field conditions (sometimes alone) and early mornings, evenings and many weekends. Memorial Day and the 4th of July will be mandatory workdays.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle suited for transportation to complete assigned tasks.
- Must be willing to submit to criminal and driving background checks, the results of which will be shared with the candidate and, if relevant to the position, may be discussed during an interview.
Physical requirements:
Include lifting, reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, sitting, typing, driving, speaking, and holding and supporting field equipment. Must be able to speak for extended periods of time. Must be able to work outdoors in variable, and sometimes harsh, weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
