The Role

The Communications Specialist plays a hands-on role in executing the Lake George Association's Community Engagement strategy by creating and publishing engaging digital content that educates, inspires and mobilizes the public to protect Lake George's water quality and clarity.

Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, this role focused on daily execution across owned media channels - website, email and social media - while collaborating closely with science, advocacy, development and community teams. This position is ideal for a strong writer and communicator who wants to grow their career in environmental communications within a mission-driven organization. 
 

What You'll Do

  • Serve as a digital brand ambassador for the Lake George Association across social media platforms.
  • Create, publish and manage content for LGA's website, blog, email and social channels.
  • Help translate science, programs and advocacy efforts into clear, accessible public stories.
  • Support communications for campaigns, events, fundraising initiatives and public education projects.
  • Track performance metrics and help refine content based on engagement and audience data.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and partners to gather assets and support storytelling efforts.

What We're Looking For

  • A strong writer and editor with experience and managing digital content and digital channels.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, marketing or a related field.
  • Interest in environmental protection, science communication or advocacy.
  • Knowledge of, or connection to, the Lake George Watershed, Adirondack Park and/or freshwater conservation.
  • Experience contributing to or managing emails or website content.
  • Organized, detail-oriented and comfortable juggling multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Collaborative, curious and eager to learn and grow.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends to support events and initiatives. 

Full Communications Specialist Job DescriptionPosition Overview

The Communications Specialist plays a hands-on role in executing the Lake George Association’s (LGA) communications and marketing strategy by creating, coordinating and publishing high-quality content that educates, inspires and mobilizes the public in support of Lake George water quality protection. 

Working under the direction of the Vice President of Communications, this role focuses on daily execution across digital channels – including website, email and social media – while collaborating closely with science, solutions, advocacy and development teams to translate the LGA’s work into compelling, accessible stories. A priority focus of this role is to become the LGA’s digital brand ambassador – positively representing the organization and engaging the LGA’s audiences through owned media channels.  

This is an ideal role for a strong writer and communicator who is eager to grow professionally within a mission-driven organization and develop deeper expertise in environmental communications, digital strategy and campaign execution. 

Key Responsibilities 

Owned Media Brand Ambassador 

  • Manage daily scheduling and publishing across social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Linkedin. 
  • Ideate new, creative ways to digitally engage with LGA audiences across platforms. 
  • Digitally represent the LGA during key events throughout the year.  
  • Assist in the development and execution of a content calendar aligned with the Communications strategy; marketing, advocacy and fundraising campaigns; and other organizational priorities.  
  • Develop and publish social media content in alignment with organizational priorities and campaigns. 
     

Content Creation & Storytelling 

  • Research, draft and edit blog posts, web content and email communications that translate the LGA’s science, programs and advocacy into public-facing stories.  
  • Assist with website content updates, including news stories, events, marketing campaign landing pages and other web pages. 
  • Assist in building and sending email campaigns, including segmentation and performance tracking. 
  • Help manage and catalogue photo and video assets in collaboration with internal staff and external partners or vendors. 
  • Support drafting of educational and press materials and other content as needed. 
     

Campaign & Project Coordination 

  • Execute communications support for communications and education initiatives and campaigns, from assisting with planning through post-campaign reporting. 
  • Coordinate with Development and Community staff to support fundraising and community engagement efforts. 
  • Assist the Vice President of Communications and other staff in coordinating campaign or project assets for initiatives such as paid media, advocacy alerts, events and fundraising. 
     

Analytics & Optimization  

  • Track performance metrics across digital channels and prepare bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly reports to share with leadership.  
  • Support testing and refinement of content based on engagement and audience data. 
  • Assist in maintaining dashboards and analytics systems.  

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or a related field preferred, but not required (other combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered). 
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, marketing or related field, including experience managing social media and digital content. 
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing with accuracy and clarity.  
  • Interest in environmental protection, science communication or advocacy. 
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent deadlines. 
  • Comfort working collaboratively in a mission-driven environment.  
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed for events and activities.  
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and dedication to the mission of the LGA. 
     

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn CMS platforms, email tools and analytics, such as GA4, Meta, Later, Mailchimp, WordPress, etc.). 
  • Experience with basic design or multimedia tools (Adobe Suite, Canva, etc.). 
  • Experience supporting campaigns, events or other communications initiatives.  

SALARY & BENEFITS

The anticipated salary range is $55,000 - $65,000, commensurate with experience, along with a health benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage, 403b retirement savings with employer contributions after six months, generous paid time off, outdoor industry gear discounts and professional development opportunities.
