Science Program Overview 

The Center's Science Program is designed to be responsive to voiced information needs from partners while also proactively identifying and innovatively bridging key gaps between conservation science and practice, ensuring that the best available science reaches and informs decisions and actions in support of long-term persistence for species and processes in the face of landscape change. 

Position Overview 

This position’s primary focus is a connectivity project in the Southern Kenya – Northern Tanzania (SOKNOT) landscape. Working with project partners, the successful applicant will develop a Transboundary Corridor and Connectivity Atlas based on the habitat and movement needs of a suite of focal species (functional connectivity) and establish baseline measures of structural and functional connectivity metrics of the key corridor and dispersal areas in the landscape.  

Responsibilities & Duties 

• Collect and organize existing spatial data. 
• Analyze movement and presence data from focal wildlife species. 
• Develop resistance to movement layers using R and/or ArcGIS. 
• Conduct least-cost-corridor and OmniScape connectivity modeling. 
• Create a functional connectivity network map. 
• Calculate a set of connectivity metrics. 
• Communicate with project partners throughout the project duration. 
• Write project reports. 
• Support the Science Program as a dependable, collaborative team member, and undertake additional tasks for the organization as requested.

Qualifications 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience with statistical methods, including path, step, and/or resource selection models. 
• Proficiency in modeling connectivity (least-cost paths, OmniScape, etc.). 
• Familiarity with wildlife movement data. 
• Proficiency in spatial analysis using R and ArcGIS. 
• Demonstrated team communication and coordination skills. 
• Ability to work independently with big data sets and sophisticated data manipulation and analysis. 
• Well-organized, motivated, and detail-oriented. 
• Skill in writing clear, accurate, and concise reports. 
• Demonstrated personal initiative, adaptability, and creativity in problem-solving. 
• Familiarity with or experience working in east Africa. 

Essential Qualifications: 

• Ability to occasionally adjust a US-based work schedule to overlap with east Africa or other time zones. 
• Ability to work effectively and respectfully across cultures. 
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
