AFNHA is seeking AmeriCorps National Service members for conservation or cultural heritage one-year positions for program year beginning September 2025.
Conservation AmeriCorps members get involved by improving public lands and providing outreach and education to local community members and students. Get your hands dirty! Plant trees, remove invasive species, and provide educational programming and encourage environmental stewardship. Members benefit local communities & landscapes while gaining professional experience & strengthening skills.
Applicants are encouraged with degree or experience related to natural resources, conservation, wildlife biology, interpretation, communications, and similar fields. Should be physically capable of doing field work, strong written and oral communication in English, and comfortable with common computer programs. Specialized skills like GIS a plus. Personal car recommended. Cultural heritage positions are also available.
Members serve in a variety of locations across our eastern West Virginia counties including with agencies like the Monongahela National Forest and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, nonprofits like The Nature Conservancy and watershed organizations, and others. Those serving with federal agencies may be eligible for a Public Lands Preferred Employment Status through the US Forest Service or US Fish and Wildlife.
Members live in friendly communities in an outstandingly beautiful mountain area with abundant recreational opportunities. AFNHA AmeriCorps service also provides opportunities for a variety of training, service projects and team activities. While ideal start date is early September, recruiting will continue for start times through fall 2025 or until all positions are filled.
The Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (AFNHA) conserves, interprets, and promotes forest heritage to enhance landscapes and communities in the highlands of West Virginia and Maryland. AFNHA works with partners to accomplish this through community development, conservation, celebrating cultural heritage, and creating opportunities for transformational experiences.
