POSITION PURPOSE:
Crew Supervisors are RMYC field-based staff who manage the day-to-day operations of crews of youth and young adults, and are integral to the fulfillment of RMYC’s mission. The Crew Supervisor will manage a diverse crew of participants between the ages of 17 to 25 in the safe and efficient completion of conservation projects outdoors, while providing structured opportunities for personal and professional development throughout this season. Often working under minimal supervision, Crew Supervisors exercise discretion and independent judgment on matters relating to the safety, well-being, and performance of crew members in the field. Crew supervisors are trained, empowered, and expected to enforce RMYC and AmeriCorps policies and expected behavior of Corpsmembers in office and the field.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Crew Operations

  • Directly supervise a crew of AmeriCorps members in the completion of projects such as trail construction/maintenance, fencing, invasive species removal, and additional projects as assigned, meeting high standards of safety, quality and efficiency.
  • Provide on-the-job training and coaching to members to develop necessary project-related skills.
  • Manage personnel matters with a level of autonomy from staff while in remote areas with limited communication and support channels.
  • Hold crew accountable to RMYC policy and code of conduct and utilize the discipline spectrum, as needed, with staff support.
  • If deployed, lead crew during disaster relief work lasting up to 45 days.
  • Inform RMYC staff and agency partners of important crew developments during formal and informal meetings/debriefs.
  • Plan for and purchase crew-related food and supplies as needed, with a set budget, and properly document receipts.

Risk Management

  • Manage crew’s physical/emotional well-being and promote a culture of safety in all aspects of crew life.
  • Safely transport crew to/from project sites in an RMYC vehicle.
  • Respond to safety concerns with appropriate and timely decisions and action, keeping RMYC staff informed.
  • Be the primary point of contact in critical situations such as wildfires, medical emergencies, and other unanticipated crises.

Corpsmember Development

  • Maintain a healthy group dynamic by promoting inclusivity, communication, and conflict resolution.
  • Facilitate both formal and informal job, college readiness, and life skills training on an ongoing basis.
  • Serve as a professional role model, upholding RMYC policies and holding members accountable for actions.
  • Oversee a highly structured, participatory camp environment during spike projects

Corpsmember Management

  • Review and approve member time cards, directing members on appropriate coding and ultimately approving all member time.
  • Prepare mid-season and end-of-season member evaluations with the support of RMYC Training Staff.
  • Enforce RMYC and AmeriCorps policies, prepare corrective action as needed for policy violations up to and including the exit of a corpsmember if needed
  • Assist in the processing of corpsmember onboarding and exiting paperwork

Independent Leadership and Critical Thinking Skills.

  • Be adaptable. The nature of spike work in remote areas presents unique challenges that aren’t always anticipated, and which may require critical decisions to be made without immediate guidance and/or support from RMYC staff or agency partners.
  • Make informed decisions in the field to accommodate for changing weather conditions, gear malfunctions, and other unanticipated events.
  • Make informed safety and work decisions in remote areas with limited communication and support channels.
  • Manage and coordinate emergency response in remote areas with limited communication and support channels, and where additional resources or evacuation might take hours or days to be coordinated.

Administrative Duties

  • Prepare detailed, accurate weekly reports (project data, photos, incident reports, job hazard analysis, etc.).
  • Record and document all personnel matters with incident reports and uphold RMYC’s discipline process and expectations.
  • Submit all receipts in a timely manner as described in RMYC’s Receipt Policy.
