GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position is responsible for the planning, implementation, coordination, and continual improvement of the statewide conservation education program in schools, in coordination with education partners, the Game and Fish, and the public. This includes programs such as Trout in the Classroom, National Archery in Schools, Hunter Education, Project WILD, and other conservation education programming, including summer camps. This position collaborates with the education team to create professional development and resources for teachers in the realm of wildlife, fisheries, habitat, and conservation. This position acts as a liaison with the Department of Education, Professional Standards Teaching Board, UW College of Education and other education entities within the state. This position works closely with the other members of the education team and Communications and Education Division to plan and execute statewide education, outreach events and summer camps.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Administer the statewide conservation education programs in schools in coordination with education partners and the education team. 
  • Manage incoming requests and track/report in-school education programs statewide with regional information and education specialists. 
  • Generate and manage curricular and physical resources for teachers. This includes the Conservation Crate program, curating educator resources on the website, and coordinating and tracking education in schools statewide. 
  • Provide professional development for teachers in the realm of wildlife, habitat, and conservation.
  • Coordinate in-school education programming, and serve as liaison with education partners
  • Serve as the WY Trout in the Classroom (TIC) coordinator. This involves leading the partnership with Trout Unlimited (TU) to administer the national TIC program across the state, including an annual school application and selection process; coordinating egg/food delivery; maintaining approved release sites; and administering the grant process with TU.
  • Facilitate Project WILD workshops for teachers around the state; promote the curriculum within Wyoming schools and pursue grant opportunities when applicable.
  • Provide high-quality customer service to educators and the public 
  • Purchase, inventory, maintain, and distribute conservation education materials to instructors statewide.
  • Provide up-to-date and easy-to-access resources to educators, including but not limited to lesson plans, digital content, and physical resources.
  • Track conservation education resource demand across the state and ensure that resources are being allocated commensurate to demand
  • Assist with the National Archery in Schools Program and statewide tournament.
  • Assist with hunter recruitment and retention programming, conservation education programming, and other statewide education and outreach efforts and/or events.
  • Assist the education team with facilitating summer camp programming for youth, women, and families. 
  • Assist the greater communications and education division as needed and regional education and outreach needs.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Preference may be given to those who have a bachelor's degree in education, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or related field.
  • Preference may be given to those who have experience with public speaking and teaching wide age ranges / diverse audiences
  • Preference may be given to those who have experience developing curriculum and educational resources. 
  • Preference may be given to those who have experience in coordinating large programs with multiple partners
  • Preference may be given to those with expertise in experiential, place-based, or outdoor education

**Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE: 

  • Demonstrated experience developing curriculum, lesson plans, and teaching resources for a wide range of audiences. 
  • Have exceptional skills in written and oral communication, customer service, multi-tasking, and organization.
  • Must have the ability to work within a collaborative team environment
  • Must have the ability to build positive working relationships within the agency and externally.
  • Proficiency in outdoor skills, wildlife management/natural resources, and principles of state wildlife agencies or willingness to learn
  • Must have strong computer skills in Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and database management.
  • Ability to problem-solve within the scope of responsibility. Ability to work independently and make sound judgment calls based upon established guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Education)

Experience:

0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Education Program Specialist.

 OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Education Program Specialist.
 
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs., and be able to work some evenings and weekends
  • Travel within the state is expected.
