Job Title: Ecological Restoration Technician, Level I
FLSA: Non-exempt
Reports to: Eco Crew Leader/Supervsior, Director of Operations
Supervision: No
Job Summary:
The Restoration Technician, level I, works with the eco restoration team (Crew leader, tech II, Tech I’s and Supervisor) to restore natural areas related to ecosystem management. The work entails herbicide applications, controlled burns, cutting and clearing non-native brush, plant installations. The tech I will report direct report to the job site daily, unless otherwise advised.
Job Functions:
- Jobsite awareness: ensure the proper and safe use of equipment, correcting use or improper PPE for any employee on a job site
- Restoring site health under the direction of supervisors, crew leaders and Tech II’s based on site needs.
- Be aware of weather forecast and recognize changes in weather: re-work assignments as necessary to accommodate weather (e.g., do not mix chemicals when rain is imminent, do not conduct burns if high winds are predicted or apparent, etc.)
- Use, maintain, and repair (in field, if practical), or arrange for the repair of equipment (including hand tools) daily. Ready equipment at the end of each day; be ready for tomorrow today.
- Other functions as required or directed by the crew leader, supervisor and/or management team.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability to identify native and invasive plant species.
- Ability to operate a variety of power tools and equipment safely.
- Understanding of herbicides and chemicals.
- Understanding of restoration burn techniques.
- Ability to assess a job site and work patterns for efficient operations.
- Knowledge of and follow Semper Fi safety protocols.
- Knowledge of environmental restoration skills and basic environmental education
- Knowledgeable of native plant installation practices; planting of plugs, seed, native trees and shrubs
- Ability to perform a wide variety of manual labor for extended periods of time, and often under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to understand and follow Semper Fi systems and processes.
- Ability to work and engage trust with a diverse population of people.
- Ability to structure work to ensure meeting time constraints.
Experience & Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must obtain a Pesticide/Herbicide operator license in the state of Illinois, prior to start date.
- Complete the S130/190 wildland fire certification.
- Curiosity to explore biology, ecological sustainability or environmental studies.
- Must have a current, active Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of standing, walking, stooping, carrying is required. At times, employee may have to lift 40 pounds at a time.
