Position Summary:

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Paid, full-time Temporary cultural resource positions are available with Colorado State University’s (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at military installations throughout the United States. These positions include internships and early career opportunities. Military affiliation is not required to apply for any of these positions.

If you are a current graduate student, recent graduate, or early-career professional that is interested in learning more about cultural resource management on federal lands, these positions are the perfect opportunity to build connections and gain hands-on experience that will help you excel in the field of cultural resource management. You will gain firsthand experience with the regulatory drivers behind cultural resource management, and the methods that are used to preserve them while under the guidance of Cultural Resource Managers and Specialists.

The positions, and the associated projects, vary by military installation, and each position is intended to provide a set of unique projects and tasks that will help graduate students and early career professionals gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of cultural resources management. Through these positions, successful technicians will have the opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge in a variety of areas, including but not limited to:

• Historical and archival research
• National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance
• Archaeological inventory and assessment
• Historic property evaluation and monitoring
• Cultural resource identification
• GPS data collection and GIS mapping
• Osteological identification and analysis
• State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) correspondence and documentation
• Writing and editing technical reports
• Cultural resource management planning

Required Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in history, anthropology, archaeology, cultural resources management, architectural history, historic preservation, or a related field.
• Strong technical writing skills.
• Familiar with the National Historic Preservation Act and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
• Experience conducting research and compiling background information.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
