Pay: $980/week paid biweekly ($480/week living stipend + $500 additional member benefit)

Appalachian Conservation Corps:
Our Individual Placement program works to connect young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations.
As an AmeriCorps program, Individual Placements commit to a term of service in order to gain hands-on experience at their placement site, and ACC supports them through their term, as well as provides a variety of benefits to help them succeed in achieving their career goals. ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.
Position Summary:
The Cultural Resources Inventory System (CRIS) Individual Placement will support Preservation Services. Preservation Services promotes the preservation of cultural landscapes and historic structures through research, planning, and stewardship to parks and historic properties in the NPS National Capital Region.
The successful candidate will work with and assist historical landscape architects, historians, and other preservation professionals to complete updates to Cultural Landscape Inventories (CLIs) located in a variety of National Park sites in the National Capital Region (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia). This in-person internship opportunity is located in Washington, DC and includes a combination of in-person office work and field documentation.
The internship involves researching the landscape history and associated physical development of a historic property; site visits and field work to document existing conditions with photographs, maps, and graphics; analyzing landscape features; preparing updates; entering information into the Cultural Resources Inventory System (CRIS) database; and performing other duties as assigned. This opportunity will allow the intern to learn about and participate in a preservation program by working directly with Federal cultural resource professionals in the National Capital Region – Preservation Services.
Housing is NOT provided for this position.
Essential roles and responsibilities include:
- Site visits and historical research;
- Participating in landscape condition discussions with park staff;
- Photography and developing written narratives;
- Photography management with Adobe Creative Suite;
- Editing maps using GIS
General Qualifications:
To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award. In addition, applicants must:
- Possess a valid driver’s license
Desired Skills/Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in historic preservation, landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning, or geography
Schedule:
- These positions are full-time, 40 hour/week
- Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
Benefits:
- $980/week paid biweekly ($480/week living stipend + $500 additional member benefit)
- $7,395 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award upon successful completion of 1700 hour service term (award amount varies based on length of commitment and can be used for paying off federal student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college)
- $1,750 for professional development fund
- Option to enroll in health, vision, and dental benefits
- Eligibility for the Public Land Corps Hiring Authority upon successful completion – noncompetitive hiring status for two years when applying for federal positions.

- Additional subject-specific certifications and trainings may be offered (Chainsaw training, pesticides, etc)
