Great Basin Institute/BLM Eagle Lake Field Office

The Great Basin Institute, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, is hiring 1 Park Ranger position under the BLM’s Direct Hire Authority Program (DHA)* with the Eagle Lake Field Office, in CA. Successful completion of 11-week term will result in the applicant being eligible for the DHA-RAI Certificate of Completion, program participants that meet Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for a BLM mission-critical/hard-to-fill occupation may be directly appointed without competition to a full time, permanent position vacancy.

The selected candidate will assist the Outdoor Recreation Planner with the Off-highway Vehicle (OHV) and Wilderness Study Area (WSA) restoration and recreation facilities record management, monitoring, mapping and maintenance. No pre qualifications, only a drivers license. Should be prepared to work outdoors in inclement weather and be able to lift up to 50 pounds. 

Duties Include:
Working within the Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation sites and other BLM Recreation areas as a Park Ranger. The intern will record all data and be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the equipment. The Intern will work with and assist the Outdoor Recreation Planner in planning and conducting restoration, recording recreation facilities, record management, monitoring, mapping, maintenance, public education, building partnerships, public education and public contracts. The individual would work alongside 2-3 additional Park Rangers and other BLM staff. The position includes on the groundwork such as installing signs on legal and unauthorized routes to allow for natural revegetation within the Tunnison, Five Springs, Twin Peaks, Dry Valley and Skedaddle WSA’s and performing restoration, weed removal, painting, cleaning and maintaining facilities and trail work within the BLM Recreation areas.

*The DHA program is intended for those currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, at an accredited college or university. Undergraduate is defined as an associate or bachelor's degree program. 

Contract Timeline:

• 11 week appointment beginning in June 2024, pending successful completion and passage of DOI Background Investigation
• June - August
• Full-time, 40-hrs wk

Location: Eagle Lake Field Office, Susanville, CA

Compensation and Benefits:

• Wage: $20/hr
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance available at no cost
• Housing is not provided but housing allowance may be available to non-local candidates (approval required)
• Relocation support may be provided to those who will need to relocate (approval required)

Job Qualifications:

• Must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate (<1 year from graduation) to be eligible for the DHA program
• In College to complete a Bachelor’s degree or a combination of relevant education and field experience
• Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge recreation management
• Ability to safely navigate to field sites using maps/compass and handheld GPS devices
• High level of proficiency leading field work in dynamic field settings
• Basic organizational skills
• Relocation support may be provided to those who will need to relocate (approval required)
• Reliable, team-player with strong leadership and communication skills
• Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; and
• Successfully complete and pass a federal background check
