POSITION DESCRIPTION: Education and Outreach Associate (Full-time, Hybrid)

SUMMARY: The International SeaKeepers Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on educating the next generation about ocean conservation through free, hands-on experiences with the marine research, yachting, and boating communities. The Education and Outreach Associate will directly assist the Education and Outreach Manager and Community Engagement Associate in creating and managing the activities within the Education & Outreach and Community Engagement programs at SeaKeepers. This position mainly engages with students, teachers, and the local community to foster care and appreciation of the marine environment. Internally, they will work with the SeaKeepers Programming team to ensure that we are meeting programming goals and maintaining partner communication across all aspects of E&O programming in the South Florida area.

START DATE: Immediately 

LOCATION: Hybrid - Coral Gables, FL

PAY RANGE: Full-time, 40k-45k annually depending on skills and experience 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in managing the development of Education & Outreach programming mainly by helping to plan and execute:

  • Floating classrooms (FC), where local or visiting school groups or organizations are taken out on the water for 2-4 hour hands-on environmental education experiences in Biscayne Bay, Fort Lauderdale, or the Florida Keys aboard partner DISCOVERY Vessels;
  • Classroom presentations, where SK E&O team members go into school or afterschool groups to present on select topics of marine science, local ecology, and environmental conservation and facilitate hands-on activities; 
  • Coastal Clean-ups, when SK team members engage the local community by reducing marine debris in coastal habitats like parks, beaches, seagrass beds, mangroves, and nearshore reefs;
  • The Junior SeaKeepers Program (JSK), which engages a selected group of high school students from Miami-Dade, Broward, and East Monroe Counties in extracurricular marine science training and research for academic year cohorts;
  • Teacher Workshops, which engage educators in a free, three-day workshop that provides them with marine conservation activities and resources to bring back to their own curriculums; 
  • Communication with local partners to maximize impact by sharing expertise and in educational programs like classroom presentations, FC’s, and JSK;
  • Development of SeaKeepers education resources, including lesson plans, on-the-water activities, and website content, alongside the Education and Outreach Manager and Community Engagement Associate;
  • Community programming through partnered events like outreach fairs, regional cleanups, and yacht crew socials.

MINIMUM JOB/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) preferably in an environmental or education-related degree. 
  • Experience in the formal or informal education setting teaching, mentoring, or working closely with students.
  • Experience with marine science and/or marine research topics.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Experience in science communication, particularly for young or inexperienced audiences.
  • Excellent English grammatical and spelling skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in office software including MSOffice (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Workspace, Dropbox, Zoom, and internet navigation software.
  • Physically able to work outdoors or on the water for extended periods of time in multiple kinds of South Florida weather/water conditions.
  • Open Water SCUBA certification or higher.
  • Comfort in and around small to medium sized boats. 
  • Must have a car and valid US driver's license or otherwise access to reliable transportation for irregular event schedule in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. 
  • Ability to work in a small team of around 10 full-time employees, with room for growth.
  • A positive attitude, passion for community education, and desire to conserve the ocean. 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCES/SKILLS:

  • Curriculum or lesson plan creation, especially for the sciences. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Content creation and/or photography skills. 
  • Experience working in or with the yachting community. 
  • Lifeguard or CPR certification. 

** PLEASE NOTE that a full time position will fulfill 40 hrs per week in a hybrid schedule. Additional time may be spent helping with Floating Classrooms, Coastal Cleanups or Junior SeaKeepers experiences outside of a normal work schedule (ie. on the weekends) in Biscayne Bay or similar up to 3 times per month and will be compensated using a Flex Time system.
