General Description:

The ZooMontana Educator position develops formal, informal, and interpretive educational programs and materials; as well as coordinates and facilitates educational programs. Additionally, this position actively participates in animal handling and supports the development of ZooMontana’s Ambassador Animal program.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop educational programming for various ages that meet and/or exceed Montana state standards and national benchmarks.
  • Deliver on and off-site educational programs for schools, daycares, adult groups, and other various audiences.
  • Create, deliver, and distribute educational videos and programs.
  • Assists with the development and organization of educational content and materials for special events, graphics, and habitats geared for children and adults.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with other local organizations.
  • Follow ZooMontana handling protocols for all animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates.
  • Assist with training of ambassador animals for program use.
  • Maintain records.
  • Aids in the implementation of conservation projects and events.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment within ZooMontana.
  • Follow appropriate safety protocol.
  • Conduct light office cleaning.
  • Assist animal care staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and occasional evening events/programs.
  • Must be willing to adapt to unexpected program changes.
  • Must be willing to utilize technology within educational programming including, but not limited to: Microsoft Office programs, video editing technology, video conferencing technology, and more.
  • Maintain clean driving record for safe operation of zoo vehicles and possess and maintain a state of Montana driver’s license.
  • Must have excellent interpretation skills, be comfortable with public speaking, and be able to improvise when needed.
  • Must be willing to handle ambassador animals.
  • Must be able to work with all members of the public.
  • Must be willing to clean and care for animals when needed.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to withstand typical Montana climate.

Experience:

Applicants with an undergraduate degree in a life science, or the equivalent in experience preferred. Relevant professional experience in a zoological education department, nature center, or other informal learning center is ideal. Strong public speaking skills and the ability to improvise are a must. Applicant must possess both strong team and individual work skills.
