JOB SUMMARY:

This position is offered through the Shavano Conservation District (SCD) in partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and is based in the Montrose Field Office on Colorado’s Western Slope. The position provides engineering and survey technical assistance for agricultural irrigation projects, primarily supporting the NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). This is a one-year, grant-funded position with the possibility of extension based on funding availability. While employed by SCD, the Technician will work closely with NRCS staff to design and implement approved conservation projects and will also assist with Shavano Conservation District conservation projects as needed, coordinating with landowners, service providers, and agency staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Complete feasibility determinations and preliminary quantity estimates for agricultural irrigation and conservation projects.
  • Conduct field surveys and collect site data to support engineering design and project implementation.
  • Prepare or assist with engineering designs, drawings, and technical documentation in coordination with NRCS staff.
  • Perform construction inspections and provide technical support during project implementation to ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Initiate and maintain professional contact with landowners interested in or eligible for soil and water conservation projects, and coordinate with NRCS staff and service providers as needed.
  • Assist with Shavano Conservation District programs, projects, and conservation initiatives as needed to support District goals and funding requirements.
  • Knowledge of engineering mathematics and its application to surveying, quantity calculations, and engineering design support.
  • Knowledge of computer applications used in engineering and technical work, including Windows-based operating systems, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and engineering design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Ability to assist with engineering surveys, collect and interpret field data, and apply established engineering criteria, standards, and procedures in the development of plans and drawings.
  • Knowledge of basic hydraulic principles related to water conveyance systems, agricultural irrigation practices, and soil and water conservation measures.
  • Familiarity with agricultural land-use practices and conservation-related construction activities.
  • Ability to assist with construction inspections and observe contractor operations for conformance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records, organizing project files, and preparing technical documentation and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with landowners, contractors, and agency personnel and to represent the Shavano Conservation District and NRCS in a professional manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, natural resources, agronomy, crop science or coursework relevant to the position, or equivalent experience .
  • Experience in designing irrigation systems, pipelines, pumps: 1 year
  • Surveying: 1 year
  • AutoCAD Civil 3d: 1 year
  • Advanced Mathematic Principles: 1 year
  • Clean, valid Colorado Driver's License
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working with diverse partners, contractors, and landowners
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and projects independently
  • Ability to communicate technical and scientific information to non-technical audience
  • Self-motivated and able to identify tasks, problems, and solutions independently

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preliminary surveying for ditch & irrigation equipment 
  • Knowledge of ditch and irrigation systems, and water-use efficiency in agricultural settings
  • Experience with federal conservation programs (EQIP, CSP, etc.)

PHYSICAL REEQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work outdoors on uneven terrain and in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry field equipment and perform hands-on tasks.
