The New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority's Meadowlands Research & Restoration Institute (MRRI-NJSEA) is a dedicated team of scientists who work to monitor, restore, and preserve the delicate ecosystems of the New Jersey Meadowlands. Located in northeastern New Jersey, the Meadowlands are home to a wide diversity of imperiled flora and fauna nestled within an urbanized landscape.
MRRI-NJSEA is seeking a part-time Environmental Communications Intern to support staff in enhancing public engagement and visibility. The goal of the position is to bolster MRRI’s social media presence, keep the website current, and create outreach and educational materials that highlight ongoing research, restoration, and community initiatives in the Meadowlands.
Job Description:
- Developing engaging posts, graphics, and videos for social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram
- Scheduling and posting content, monitoring engagement, and responding to comments/messages
- Producing interactive educational materials
- Updating MRRI-NJSEA's website with current events and activities
- Capturing and editing photos/videos of field work, events, and research activities
- Interacting with followers, researchers, and partner organizations to promote awareness and collaboration
- Tracking social media metrics and analyzing engagement trends to improve outreach strategies
- Assisting with marketing educational programs and public events
- Creating infographics, flyers, and other visuals to support communication efforts
- Staying informed on social media trends, environmental news, and relevant topics to enhance content
- Assisting with field research and restoration activities, as needed
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or related field with communications and/or education courses preferred
- Experience with using social media to reach a diverse audience about environmental research and restoration
- Understanding of social media tools and strategies including algorithms and search engine optimization (SEO)
- Experience with long days in the field in rugged terrain and occasionally unfavorable conditions
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills
- Experience with Microsoft suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience with ArcGIS StoryMap
- Familiarity with flora and fauna of the northeastern United States preferred
- Ability to commute to and from Lyndhurst, New Jersey required
