Rare opportunity! Zookeeper and Environmental Educator Intern for a mobile zoo needed! You will receive hands-on experience with exotic animals in a zoo setting, which is difficult to obtain! This is a great resume builder for zookeeping, animal husbandry, or environmental education careers.

Looking for a committed, reliable person for a part time internship at a private educational zoo facility near Yelm. We house exotic and domestic animals that are part of a zoo that travels to do outreach. Our cherished Animal Ambassadors include hedgehogs, goats, snakes, hissing cockroaches, mini pigs, and many others that you will get to pet or even cuddle! You do not have to interact with the snakes or insects if you have fears of them. You can learn about all aspects of their care and handling, veterinary care, enrichment, and biological facts. You will learn how to create, implement, and teach science-based Outreach programs to all ages. You will travel with the Director or other educator in the company vehicle to various locations around Puget Sound for events, nursing homes, camps, birthday parties, fairs, schools, etc. We travel locally only, no overnights needed.

You will choose a project to complete during the internship that contributes to the zoo. It can be creating enrichment, building an enclosure, creating a program, marketing, etc.

Animal handling and care experience is required, which includes pets. Environmental education experience preferred. Must be comfortable with and have experience with small children.

You will work 24 hours/week for 8- 10 weeks in the summer. You will be REQUIRED to work one weekend day almost every weekend. Often we have programs on Saturdays, but sometimes we have programs on Sundays. The other 2 days per week can be your choice. The stipend of $1600 is for the entire internship, to help offset your costs.

During traveling program days you will work 6-10 hours. When we don’t have programs you can help with: animal care, cleaning, social media posts, enclosure construction, fence repair, painting, enclosure maintenance, gardening, weeding, groundskeeping, mucking stalls, etc. No experience with these tasks is required, we will train.

You will be considered first when we hire for positions in the fall and next summer. Opportunities for advancement, even management positions if you have a mind for business, marketing, or sales. 

Ages 16 and up, must be responsible and able to work independently. Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly, push/pull 200 pounds, bend, kneel, use hands and arms, speak, hear, see, walk on uneven ground, step over a 2 foot barrier, work in all weather outdoors, around allergens, and in dusty, dirty conditions. Must have reliable transportation to Roy, WA. There is no public transportation.
