About: Howard EcoWorks (EcoWorks) is a non-profit social enterprise organization in Columbia, MD. EcoWorks’ mission is to empower communities and diverse workforces to conserve and restore our natural systems for future generations. We are currently accepting applications for the Executive Director position at our organization.

Job Description: Executive Director | Full-time, Exempt
Reports to: Board of Directors
Supervises: Oversees Operations Director, Office Manager, Marketing and Outreach Coordinator, Community Engagement Specialist; indirectly oversees up to 30 employees

Job Description:
The Executive Director oversees all of Howard EcoWorks operations, functions, and activities. Provides leadership for EcoWorks to advance its mission and values and increase its impact in and services to the community. Responsible, directly and indirectly, to the Board of Directors for all aspects of the organization, including fundraising, marketing, Board and community relations, planning, creation and delivery of products and services, public relations, staff, and financial management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mission Advancement
- Works in partnership with the Board of Directors in developing and updating the organization’s strategic plan, goals and objectives.
- Advances the mission and strategic plan by developing and managing programs and services.
- Ensures a high level of program quality, including regular tracking, evaluation and reporting on measures of success.
- Financial Sustainability
- Leads fundraising to support organizational operations from a variety of sources, including grants, government, foundations, fee for service, corporate and individual donors, and an annual fundraising event Soak It Up.
- Develops the annual budget, in cooperation with and subject to the approval of, the Board of Directors.
- Oversees financial management of the organization, ensuring compliance with financial policies, managing accounts, and providing regular reporting to the Board of Directors on the financial status of the organization. Oversees outsourced bookkeeper / accountant.
- Oversees annual audit.
- Oversees procurement and contractual management obligations and processes.
- Oversees and manages grant and contract deliverables, reports, budgets and schedules.
- Governance
- Cultivates a strong, transparent working relationship with the Board of Directors and provides accurate, complete and timely information on the organization’s programs, services and finances.
- Informs and advises the Board regarding current trends, problems and opportunities that are important to the organization’s mission and operations.
- Serves as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors.
- Operations
- Maintains the necessary financial, human resources, and other management and administrative policies, procedures and systems to ensure compliance, effectiveness and efficiency.
- Brings relevant policies and financing needs to the Board of Directors for review and approval.
- Recruits and retains highly qualified personnel and administers an effective human resources system. Provides an environment that supports employees and volunteers in achievement of EcoWorks’ goals. Delegates programming efforts for workforce development, project management and land management to staff.
- Ensures smooth day-to-day management of the organization, including execution of all contracts and agreements and management of internal and external space.
- Oversees the redevelopment, operations, use and activities at EcoWorks Holly Hills, Glenwood, location.
- Ensures the legal integrity of the organization, monitoring compliance of the organization with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Proactively manages risk for the organization, staff, Board, and volunteers
- Marketing and Communications
- Implements marketing initiatives to support project and program development, fundraising and sales.
- Ensures EcoWorks’ accomplishments are known throughout the community via social media, press, and presentations.
- Serves as the primary spokesperson for the organization and is responsible for the organization’s relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including staff, the Board, clients, community partners, funders, local government, and media.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as executive director or in other managerial position
- Experience in developing and executing strategies and plans
- Ability to apply successful fundraising and networking techniques
- Outstanding organization and leadership abilities
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and public speaking skills
- Knowledge and experience in environmental industry preferred
- Preferred Master’s degree in business administration or relevant field
- Strong skills and experience in fundraising, fiscal management, budgeting, and forecasting
- Strong professional reputation and record of integrity, sound judgment, and respect for established ethical standards
- Ability to engage and foster relationships with the community, public agencies, and the Board of Directors
