Position Summary - Preservation Crew Leader

Build your hands-on preservation trades skills at multiple National Historic Sites through projects addressing a range of preservation needs, primarily carpentry and preservation maintenance. Crew members will be able to develop their skills in several conservation and general trades, including carpentry, window restoration, wood bridge repair, cedar shingle roof repairs, and other preservation maintenance tasks. The ideal Leader is excited about hands-on trades work, has at least one year of experience and/or training in preservation trades, and is ready to support a team of young people learning trades at historic sites.

Schedule: 

  • June 16 - 20: Training (virtual and on-site)
  • June 16 - November 7: Project Season
  • November 10-14: Project wrap-up and reporting

Project Locations: Western Pennsylvania

  • Flight 93 National Memorial
  • Friendship Hill National Historic Site
  • Fort Necessity National Historic Site
  • Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
  • Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship
  • Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
  • Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff
  • Respond to and manage incidents and crew conflicts in the field
  • Establish group norms and a culture of safety – emotional and physical, throughout the season

Required Qualifications 

  • Experience working with youth or young adults
  • 1+ year(s) experience with historic preservation trades or related skills – i.e., preservation carpentry, masonry, window restoration. The projects for this season are carpentry-heavy; some carpentry experience or training is required.
  • Physical effort is heavy to moderate for this position and requires occasional lifting or handling materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted, following proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
  • Must be able to attain a Wilderness First Aid certification before June 9.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must have the ability to legally work in the US
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and an MVR that meets SCA standards

Hours 

40-43 per week, field and admin time

Living Accommodations 

  • Housing is provided and shared with the crew, private room will be available.
  • Housing is Park Housing, and some travel is required between sites. Crew will have a “Home Base” and travel to 4 different sites, within 2 hours of the home base, throughout the season.

Compensation  

  • $850 per week, before taxes, paid bi-weekly
  • $1000 available for travel reimbursement
  • $500 Professional Development stipend

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
