About Bar Harbor Fire Department

Bar Harbor Fire Department (BHFD) provides the following services to the town and neighboring communities:

  • Fire suppression
  • Rescue operations, including vehicle extrication, ice rescue, confined space rescue, and supporting Acadia National Park during search and rescues
  • Advanced life support emergency medical services and transport
  • Fire prevention, fire inspections, and public education

BHFD's full-time firefighter/EMT's work a 42-hour week, with 4 shifts of 4 members each, providing 24/7 station coverage. BHFD cross-staffs its apparatus -- everyone on shift responds to every fire call, while members rotate between being on the first- or second-out EMS unit. A combination department, BHFD also has a cadre of call members who pick up additional apparatus or respond direct to the scene. Off-duty full-time personnel have the option to respond to page-outs as well.

BHFD encourages professional development, through a variety of paid trainings and reimbursement for certification courses.

Frequently named one of America's best small towns, Bar Harbor includes a bustling downtown, miles of coastline, a college campus, premier bio-medical facilities, its own hospital, and a huge swath of Acadia National Park. Responsible for it all, BHFD has to be ready for anything -- from a hotel fire alarm, to a critically ill patient arriving on a cruise ship, to an injured hiker miles up a trail. BHFD works closely with neighboring fire/EMS agencies, as well as the National Park Service, Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue, and occasionally the U.S. Coast Guard.
