Position: Fish Culturist (Full Time-Permanent position)

Location: Snettisham Hatchery (REMOTE, near Juneau, Alaska)

Salary: DOE - Starting at $43,000 per year plus benefits (furnished housing included)

Starting Date: July 7th, 2025

Douglas Island Pink & Chum Inc. (DIPAC) is a private non-profit organization which manages two salmon hatcheries in the Juneau area to produce salmon for the common property fisheries of northern southeast Alaska. Snettisham Salmon Hatchery produces 9.5 million sockeye smolt/fry for domestic programs and approximately 11 million sockeye fry annually for transboundary river enhancement. Snettisham Hatchery is a remote private non-profit hatchery located approximately 30 air miles south of Juneau, Alaska, and is accessible only by airplane or boat. Snettisham produces sockeye salmon for the common property fisheries of Northern Southeast Alaska. 

The goal of Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Inc. is to sustain and enhance valuable salmon resources of the State of Alaska for the economic, social, and cultural benefit of all citizens, and to promote public understanding of Alaska's salmon resources and salmon fisheries through research, education, and tourism. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • This is an entry-level fish culture position. The successful candidate will be involved with all facets of sockeye salmon production. This position works under the direction of the Hatchery Manager and Assistant Hatchery Managers and follows sockeye fish culture techniques developed specifically for Snettisham Hatchery.
  • Fry and smolt rearing, broodstock collection, adult harvest, eggtakes, egg picking, fry transport, remote field camp projects.
  • Operating hatchery equipment such as forklifts, front-end loaders, egg sorters, power tools, marine craft, and other associated equipment.    

Qualifications:  

  • One-year experience as a fish culturist and/or a two year Associates degree in aquaculture or fisheries. 
  • Willingness to further develop applicable fish culture methods and knowledge as pertains to Snettisham Hatchery and actively participate in facility development.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry and experience on computers using spreadsheets.
  • Ability to live and work cooperatively at a remote facility and to create a positive environment among other permanent staff and temporary employees.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Alaska driver’s licenses.
  • Must be in good physical health, be able to work in inclement weather, and must have the ability to lift, push, or pull heavy loads.

The above requirements may be waived if the candidate for this position is otherwise qualified.

Living Conditions:  A two-bedroom furnished duplex is provided. Twice weekly mail flights are available for mail and grocery deliveries.
