Position: Forest Stewardship Education & Communications Coordinator (Central/North) Classification: Part-time (up to 20hrs/week), Hourly Location: This position is Vermont-based, with an emphasis on outreach and programming in the northern Vermont counties (Franklin, Grand Isle, Chitenden, Lamoille, Washington, Caledonia, Orleans, Essex), and periodic travel to Montpelier office for statewide planning, team meetings, and training.
Position Summary
The Vermont Woodlands Association (VWA) seeks a part-time regional coordinator to lead outreach and education that empower landowners to care for their woods. This position will build local relationships, plan and deliver workshops, woods walks, and webinars, as well as other forestry learning opportunities across northern Vermont. The coordinator will also serve as project lead for VWA’s climate-focused outreach and education, developing a statewide initiative on climate resilience in working forests. This position will work closely with a counterpart in southern Vermont to advance VWA’s mission of supporting forest stewardship statewide.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development & Delivery (35%)
• Design and implement engaging, relevant educational programs for Vermont landowners, with a focus on stewardship, forest health, climate resilience, and sustainable land management.
• Support the development and implementation of a statewide VWA education plan
• Coordinate logistics for workshops, webinars, field days, and other learning opportunities.
• Evaluate program outcomes and impact; adjust approaches for greater effectiveness and engagement.
• Foster a sense of community among landowners and members by creating opportunities for connection, peer learning, and shared stewardship experiences.
Landowner Engagement & Support (35%)
• Develop and implement a technical and financial assistance program to assist landowners and foresters in integrating climate-smart language and practices into forest management plans.
• Create outreach tools to promote integration of climate into forest management plans, including checklists, landowner guides, template plan language, etc
• Track project outcomes and impacts
Communication (15%)
• Assist with the ongoing delivery of organizational communications through website, e-news, quarterly member newsleter, and social media channels.
• Develop project specific communication plan to support grant deliverables
Administration & Organizational Support (15%)
• Provide timely updates to the VWA board and support the work of VWA commitees, as appropriate.
• Assist with grant writing and reporting, including tracking program outcomes, impacts and success stories
• Coordinate logistics and manage registration for educational programs, workshops, and public events.
• Maintain contact/attendance data in CRM; tracking in-kind and volunteer time, as appropriate
• Participate in statewide planning and team meetings in Montpelier, VWA Board and commitee meetings.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in natural resources, education, forestry, wildlife, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Demonstrated 3-5 years of experience in environmental education and outreach, adult learning, natural resources, or a related field.
• Strong program development and delivery skills, especially in landowner or community- based education.
• Knowledge of Vermont forests, forest stewardship practices, and current conservation issues.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to connect with and motivate diverse audiences.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including working on multiple projects, and meeting deadlines.
• Familiarity with grant-funded programming, including reporting and evaluation, is a plus.
Compensation, Schedule, and Additional Details
This is a part-time position averaging approximately 20 hours per week with a flexible schedule. Pay range: $20–$25 per hour, commensurate with experience. The position includes paid holidays, travel reimbursement, and opportunities for professional development. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required, and occasional evening or weekend work and in-state travel will be expected. Please note that VWA does not currently offer health or retirement benefits for part- time employees.
