Overview

Are you a hands-on leader who enjoys working outdoors? The Larimer County Conservation Corps (LCCC) is hiring temporary Forestry Crew Leaders to encourage, supervise and serve alongside crew members.

The LCCC promotes individual development for young adults through service on meaningful conservation projects throughout the Front Range of Colorado. Learn more about LCCC here.

Forestry Crew Leaders work side-by-side with crew members and Assistant Crew Leaders to complete work projects in a variety of weather conditions and terrain, including high altitudes. Members engage in a combination of hands-on projects (using chainsaws) and service-learning activities focused on environmental awareness, community engagement and personal and professional skill development.

Schedule
Crew Leaders are expected to work 7:00am to 5:30pm Monday through Thursday and attend a staff meeting on Fridays from 8:00am to noon. If on a camping crew, crew leaders must camp Monday through Wednesday, returning to Fort Collins after working on Thursday. Meals will be provided while camping.

Crew Details
Forestry Crew Leader (Camping) late May - late September (tentative)
Crew will complete projects that can include felling, brushing, and/or limbing (chainsaws) to assist with fire mitigation near Lyons and in Loveland. Crew will camp at various designated and dispersed campgrounds near the work site, final three weeks of projects will be NOT camping.

Forestry Crew Leader (Camping) late May - mid October (tentative)
Crew will complete projects that can include felling, brushing, and/or limbing (chainsaws) to assist with fire mitigation near Estes Park and Red Feather Lakes. Crew will camp at various designated and dispersed campgrounds near the work site.

Forestry Crew Leader (Camping) early August - early November (tentative)
Crew will complete projects that can include felling, brushing, and/or limbing (chainsaws) to assist with fire mitigation near Red Feather Lakes. Crew will camp at various designated and dispersed campgrounds near the work site.

Responsibilities

Specifically, this position:

  • Completes fire mitigation, hazardous tree removal, and invasive species management using chainsaws (other projects may include habitat restoration, fence construction, and trail work)
  • Performs duties expected of any crew member including conservation work, meal preparation, camp clean up, and other day-to-day duties
  • Demonstrates the safe operation and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Safely drives a twelve-passenger van and trailer
  • Uses technology to accurately complete digital daily and weekly logs
  • Implements LCCC policies and procedures
  • Coordinates logistics with project sponsors, program coordinator, and corps manager
  • Reports directly to the program coordinator
  • Supervises a crew of six to eight AmeriCorps crew members, ages 18 to 30, daily
  • Motivates and encourages others to work and persevere in difficult and physically challenging work settings
  • Promotes leadership while encouraging the development of teamwork, self worth, conflict resolution, effective communication, goal setting, decision making, and the building of community
  • Manages and monitors the physical and emotional safety of the crew
  • Assists in training crew, in areas including, but not limited to, proper tool use, sawyer certification, and Leave No Trace principles
  • Maintains a safe working environment and enforces the use of appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Completes timesheets, evaluations, and incident reports, among other paperwork requirements
  • Facilitates team building activities, environmental education, and job/life skills curriculum on a regular basis, or as projects determine appropriate

We are looking for a candidate that will:

  • Demonstrate excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Use clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Have a background working in a team environment, providing supervision to a diverse group, preferably youth
  • Be proficient with troubleshooting and conflict management skills
  • Have previous conservation corps experience
  • Ideally, have a Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Forestry, or an education-related field; or have work experience equivalent
  • Successfully test into a Class B feller during the provided S-212 training

Qualifications

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire required for individuals performing supervisory functions.

Supplemental Information

Certification Schedule:
Wilderness First Aid will be provided late May in Fort Collins.

S-212 will be provided to leaders late April or early May at Colorado Fire Camp, travel and training expenses will be covered. Leaders will be expected to test into a Class B Feller. S-130 and S-190 will also be provided mid-August. This schedule may be modified due to holidays, training, weather, logistics, or other unforeseen circumstances. Training dates will be coordinated and communicated prior to employment. 

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of required pre-employment testing. Depending on the position, these checks may include, but are not limited to; reference checks, motor vehicle reports, employment verification, education verification, fingerprinting, criminal history information, physical, and a drug screening. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. Successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
