Exciting opportunity for a GIS Technician to contribute to the assessment, monitoring, and design of river restoration projects throughout the Pacific Northwest! This full-time position would provide critical support to Cramer Fish Sciences' (CFS) River Assessment and Design Lab in geospatial analysis; data acquisition, processing, and validation; map development, data management and organization; field work; project reporting tasks; and staff collaboration to solve problems and answer research questions. The River Assessment and Design Lab specializes in holistic river restoration planning and design ranging the full spectrum from low-tech to engineered approaches. We are looking for a motivated candidate that shares our passion for restoring rivers and contributing to aquatic species recovery. This position will be based out of Boise, ID.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gather and vet spatial data from public and private sources
  • Perform GIS analysis related to characterizing physical parameters and condition of watersheds, floodplains, and river channels
  • Create informative and visually appealing maps for public and private use
  • Conduct rapid field assessments to validate remote sensing data and analysis
  • Prepare and organize the upkeep of all equipment and supplies needed for field work and office work
  • Assist the River Assessment and Design team on various tasks including: literature reviews, data visualization, data summaries, and problem solving for various projects, studies, and other assignments
  • Perform habitat assessments including mapping of stream channels with survey grade equipment (e.g., RTK, Total Station) and measurement of fish habitat characteristics such as channel unit classification, large woody debris, substrate size, discharge, and water quality parameters
  • Data entry and organization, QA/QC, and basic summaries of fisheries and aquatic habitat related data
  • Assist with report writing and document formatting
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate course work in GIS, Fisheries Science, Ecology, Geomorphology, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Proficient with QGIS and/or ArcGIS
  • Basic level proficiency with MS Office Suite

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated experience completing complex natural resource projects using ArcGIS and/or QGIS
  • General knowledge of Pacific Northwest fish biology, aquatic or plant ecology, fish habitat requirements, fluvial geomorphology and hydrology
  • Demonstrated skills in coordinating logistics and administrative functions for field operations
  • Demonstrated experience using hydraulic modeling software to inform river condition assessments and river restoration design.
  • Experience creating data summaries and visualizations in R or Excel
  • Experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment
  • Basic writing, editing, and proof-reading skills

COMPENSATION: $20 - $25 per hour (depending upon experience).

ESOP: CFS is a 100% employee-owned company. Our employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a qualified defined contribution plan. Our target ESOP contribution is 5%. Eligibility is after one year of service with an entry date of Jan 1 or July 1.
