Hatchery Manager

The Hoh Tribe has had an active hatchery program since the early 80's, devoting significant staff time and resources primarily to the production of Cook Creek-origin winter steelhead. The Hatchery Manager oversees the operation and maintenance of the Chalaat Creek Hatchery and the successful production of winter steelhead, as well as other salmon stocks, for the economic and cultural enrichment of the Hoh Tribe. The Hatchery Manager reports to the Natural Resources Director and the Fisheries Management Biologist.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Capture and confinement of returning brood stock
- Collection of eggs and milt, as well as genetic and pathological samples from brood stock
- Monitor development of eggs and fry
- Develop and implement feeding schedules required for specific rates of fish growth
- Clean and operate Heath trays, raceways, round tanks and rearing ponds
- Observe fish behavior for signs of stress, disease or predation
- Implement and maintain measures to control predation (bird netting and electric fences)
- Monitor water quality and implement chemical treatment and prophylactic measures as needed
- Transport and stock fish when necessary
- Develop hatchery upgrades and expansion with direction from supervisors
- Distribute surplus hatchery steelhead and salmon to Hoh Tribal members
- Supervise and offer training for hatchery staff
- Develop and monitor hatchery budgets with direction from supervisors
- Maintain records and prepare reports on hatchery operation
- Ensure inventory and equipment are properly maintained and accounted for
- Ensure safety requirements are met
- Coordinate hatchery operations with other Natural Resources and Hoh Tribe functions and policies
- Conduct hatchery tours for various interest groups (Tribal youth, agency and government representatives, general public)
- Provide on-the-job training for Hoh Tribal members
- Attend meetings and workshops relevant to hatchery operations
Skills and Specifications:
- Willing to work weekends and holidays
- Ability to work independently
- Carpentry, plumbing, and electrical experiences a plus
- Willing and able to accept and understand directions
- Experience in supervising others
- Desire to work with Native Americans
- Willing and able to live and work in a small coastal community.
- Good physical condition is required. Must have the physical ability to stand and work in very cold water.
- Willing to respond to hatchery emergencies day and night as well as weekends.
Certificates/Licenses:
- Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State Driver’s License. Driver’s License must not contain any restrictions that would prevent an employee from operating a GSA vehicle or complying with the Tribe’s Vehicle Policy.
Education and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED, and at least one year of relevant hatchery work experience is required.
- Associates or Bachelors Degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture or related field is preferred.
