Position Summary 

The Head of Risk Management and Operations is a mission-driven leader responsible for guiding the Risk Management and operational excellence of Teton Science Schools. As a member of the Executive Team, this role provides strategic oversight of the entirety of the Risk Management program across multiple departments, as well as the operations for food service, IT, and property management. This leader will champion a proactive culture of risk management and safety across all campuses and programs.

This position will work with department heads to achieve desired outcomes in a collaborative environment. This position requires adaptability and a willingness to take on a variety of tasks, ensuring that the needs of the organization and its mission are always met.

Key Responsibilities 

Risk Management Leadership 

● Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of TSS’s comprehensive risk management program

● Maintain and enforce policies for incident response, emergency preparedness, insurance, and  OSHA Compliance

● Conduct organizational risk assessments and establish clear protocols.

● Convene and chair cross-departmental safety and risk committees 

● Partner with education, operations, and HR teams to deliver risk-related training and culture-building. Build and maintain a culture of safety across employees and participants. 

● Partner with insurers, legal counsel, and land management agencies for permitting

● Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as accreditation standards.

Organizational Operations Leadership

● Lead, supervise, and support functional managers in food service, IT, and property/facilities operations across all campuses 

● Develop systems to ensure operational consistency, efficiency, and excellence across departments and locations 

● Create and manage departmental budgets and resource planning processes in alignment with strategic goals 

● Lead evaluation, procurement, and implementation of tools and systems to streamline operations 

● Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and IT security standards and regulations 

Qualifications 

Required: 

● Progressively responsible experience in operations, facilities, or risk management, preferably in a nonprofit or educational setting 

● Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex systems across multiple sites

● Strong working knowledge of safety, compliance, food service operations, and IT infrastructure 

● Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills 

● Experience developing and managing budgets and vendor contracts 

● Familiarity with risk management frameworks and regulatory standards 

Preferred: 

● Experience in outdoor or place-based education settings 

● Training or certification in emergency management, safety compliance, or risk analysis 

● Strong familiarity with Teton region and/or similar rural, mission-driven institutions

● Wilderness First Responder Certification

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

● Stretches of time outdoors in all weather, including extreme temperatures and arid conditions

● May be expected to work evenings, weekends to support special programs/events

● Ability to drive a 15 passenger van or minibus

● Ability to travel to TSS campuses as needed

● Able to sit/stand at a desk for up to 8 hours

● Able to write/type
